Lyra sat on the floor with us, her violet crystal glowing brighter as it neared the pages. “The Shadow-Fang use Void-Steel,” Lyra explained, her fingers tracing the drawings of the dark blades I had seen in my vision. “It’s forged in blood and cooled in the dark of the moon. Normal shields won't stop it. It cuts through any wolf’s and poisons the soul.” “Then how do we stop it?” Kael asked, his jaw tight. “If Alaeric goes out there with normal steel, he’s a dead man.”

I am frozen at the sight as I stare down into the pits of darkness. There is nothing to see for no image forms, but shadows dart past me, the first of a pale girl, with thin blonde hair, racing down the stairs, calling after Shade in panic, and then two others, including the human. Soon the image slowly forms as more of the slaves pool beneath, taking the light with them, the candles here go dark and the light below glows, and they hover over her body shielding me from my eyes. Alchest scampers off me, as I stare from above. I do not know when I descend the stairs, but I feel more ghostly than present, a stranger in of itself, void of everything that one may think holds a semblance of sanity

My eyes seek out the flames first, and only then do I take notice of the shadowy black mist pouring out of Alaric, like an inky black abyss, it swallows up the flames, leaving him completely unharmed. I am left stunned by the power of the shadow element. The only element that is even more rare than fire. The shadowy black mist is still pouring out of him, even with the flames extinguished. It extends from Alaric, surrounding me on all sides and enveloping me, leaving a chilling trail wherever it touched.

Light shot from our joined bodies, golden and white, slamming into the shadow, wrapping around it like chains forged from sunlight. The shadow shrieked. The sound was not audible—it was a pressure inside my skull, a vibration in my teeth, a scream that bypassed the ears and went straight to the soul. It thrashed, tearing at the light, but the bonds held. Kaelen's voice rose from the water, chanting words in a language older than the packs, older than the Lycan kings, pulling the shadow down, inch by inch, toward the black pool. We were winning. Then the shadow spoke.

“We need to get out of here. Now.” Before Sasha could respond, the black pools began to bubble and churn. Shapes began to rise from them—humanoid figures made of liquid shadow, their eyes glowing a piercing red. “Get behind me,” Alaric ordered, his sword glowing faintly as he stepped between them and the advancing figures. The shadow creatures moved with unnatural speed, their bodies twisting and contorting as they lunged toward the group. Alaric met the first wave head-on, his blade cutting through them like fire through ice.

He can manipulate darkness and shadow as physical forces....conceal himself and others, create constructs from shadow-matter, suppress light sources including magical ones. At his level of development, he can use shadow to muffle sound, conceal magical signatures, and create temporary pocket spaces."

AVARA I am standing in a pool of shadows. The sky is a bruised, swollen purple, and the air is thick with the scent of ozone and wet fur. I lifted my head just enough to see it: a knot of congealed night, a writhing mass of animated shadow with tendrils like whips of solid darkness. A Shadowveil. It was pulling me into its formless body. I aimed and unleashed a lance of amethyst light. The blast struck true, and the creature didn't just die; it unraveled, dissolving into a silent puff of black smoke.
