“I have nothing to confess,” Alyssa said, her voice sharp as she faced the council circle. Her posture was straight, and her chin high. She would not bow. Not even to the ancient voices of her people.
“You have denied the will of the Goddess,” one of the elders named Rhodan said. He was tall and brittle, with a face sunken yet proud. “And in doing so, you threaten not only the prophecy, but the unity of this continent.”
“She never asked me what I wanted,” Alyssa snapped. “If I’m her reincarnation, why hasn’t she spoken to me directly? Why do I only ever hear her words through people who claim to know what’s best for me?”
