I opened my eyes to see a heavy chain wrapped around Xan’s throat, yanked tight by the trumpet bearer. Xan thrashed wildly, claws slashing the air inches from my face. Elder Xan let out a deafening howl and swiped his claws at me. I dropped low, dodging a vicious swipe, then scrambled backward. I sprinted toward the exit. I was the last trainee still in the hall. My foot slipped while running, and I fell hard to the floor, just inches from the exit. A large boot stopped right beside my face. When I looked up, my eyes met Alpha Adrian. He was shirtless.
