Salem stopped abruptly. "What? Use the what?" Kalista who was ready to collapse with suspense asked repeatedly. "This can't be," Salem whispered. "It's impossible." "Salem please, tell me what it says," Kalista pleaded. "The horn of a unicorn," someone else gave the answer. All eyes turned and fell on Orion who had been silent all through. He took a step forward and stood beside Kalista. "The horn of a unicorn is a talisman," he explained further. "It is so special and rare, because it wards off every strong magic, every evil magic you can think of. Dark spells, dark magic, blood magic, anything. It will certainly ward off the gem's power."

The forest across the river was a shadow of its former self, struggling by the day to remain standing. The unicorn looked to the full moon high in the sky. It was not long before the gathering of the unicorns would begin and the breeding season would be initiated. Each year fewer unicorns arrived in the meadow, fewer still successfully brought forth new unicorns into the world. The unicorn sighed softly. She was the last of her family left alive, Alorna of the Graymoon. She hoped that this year she would be able to breed and bring forth a new generation to protect the forest.

"Hurry up!" Alaron called out to Brinn and Lukoss. "I can see those flying things flapping on the horizon," he added as he urged them on while riding on the back of the unicorn. The blond boy slowed to a stop and looked at the scaly creatures which were circling and diving.
