Then he walked closer. I took a step back up the stair. Automatically. Not a decision — just what my body did before my brain caught up. Something shifted in his expression. Not irritation exactly. I didn't know what else to do but sob. He took a step backward. I fully expected him to stop, and I was too naive to believe that once he got the reaction he desired, he would simply leave me alone.
