She nodded toward a shy boy reading confidently to Ethan. “What changed?” Adrian looked across the room. “I think someone made him feel safe.” As the afternoon came to an end, the children gathered near the exit. Each received a bookmark made by Emily and a promise that Tomorrow House would return the following month. Sophie tugged gently on Oliver’s sleeve. “You are coming back?” Oliver smiled. “We said we would.” She hugged the new book against her chest. “I’ll be waiting.” The words stayed with everyone during the drive home.

Inside the apartment the plants were on the windowsill and the books were on the shelf and the yellow room was down the hall waiting for a small person who would be back tomorrow with Grey and the carved wolf and the purple notebook and opinions about everything. Tomorrow Isla would come home. Tonight was ours. Quietly, completely, entirely ours. We stood at the window and held hands and let the first night of the rest of it settle around us like something that had always been going to happen. Like something that had simply been waiting. We chat through the night, taking turns trying to sleep but none of us can. So, we rest in shifts, waiting for the break of dawn before we march the last leg to where we meet our enemies and make a last stand for the realm. ***** Dawn comes way too fast, yet we gather our things before the stars have completely disappeared. I watch the sky, as the twinkling diamonds fade, and the moon becomes a ghost, giving way to vivid greens and oranges as the sun peaks its head up over the horizon.
