Chapter 1: The Boy No One Noticed Rain poured heavily over the quiet city of Brookhaven, turning the streets into shining mirrors of neon light and passing headlights. Most people had already rushed home to escape the storm. But one young man was still walking alone. Ethan Cole pulled his worn hoodie tighter around his head as he walked along the empty sidewalk. His shoes were soaked, his hands were cold, and the rain dripped down his face. Still, he kept walking. Ethan was twenty-four years old, but life had not been kind to him.

No one said much. Kai looked tired. Damien looked tired. Kaicen looked tired. But no one left. No one said the words. They just sat there. Together. Even if it felt like they were falling apart. That night, the fight came back. Kai had a nightmare again. He woke up shaking. He called Damien’s name. Damien rushed in. Kai clung to him and cried. Kai said he was scared. Kai said he almost left. Kai said he was sorry.

“Don’t you apologize. Don’t you say that you feel stupid for crying. Just don’t.” She blinked up at him. “How’d you –” “Because that’s what you always do after you cry in front of me, baby.” She paused. “I do?” “Yeah. You do.” He stroked her cheek, ran his fingers through her mass of curls. “Know what else?” “No.” “You only have the nightmare on nights that you sleep alone.” “I do?” she repeated. “Yeah. You do.”

There were faint dark circles under his eyes, and there was a probing look in the way he watched me. "Did you sleep okay last night?" he asked. I yawned and rubbed my eyes. "Not really. I had a nightmare." "What did you dream about?" I looked at him, my eyes wide, innocent, and confused. "I dreamed about your brother, but it felt like he actually came by and kissed me." "Dante's" body went rigid, and his eyes behind his glasses narrowed sharply. "Are you sure it was a dream?" "I guess…" I said, sounding uncertain. "It just felt so real. He reeked of alcohol."

"Nothing that can't wait until tomorrow." Five hours later we were sitting on her bed. I was next to her, and she'd covered us with that big blanket of hers. My head was on her shoulder, and I found myself nodding off. The episode we were watching was called 'Nightmares,' where a little boy in a coma was causing everyone's deepest fears to manifest.

He beats me more than he ever loved me; I could not even say that he loves me; I think he just tolerates me. Today, I was alone in the house cleaning as usual. I could barely keep my eyes open, so tired after not being able to sleep all night cause of the nightmares; I could scarcely catch any sleep because of my night terrors; they are so horrible that I wake up from each nightmare jerking awake, gasping for breath. In times like this, I just long for someone to be here, to hold me as I cry. But my parents are long gone and there was no one now.

she said solemnly, sitting on the edge of his bed. “I can’t sleep,” he whispered, clutching his blanket. Fear was written all over his small face. “Why?” she asked gently. “Why? Did something scare you?” He sat upright, folding his thin arms across his chest. “I… I’m scared of nightmares,” he said frantically. “Nightmares? Since when, Johnny?” Alicia asked, brushing his hair. “Since I watched The Shinning.” “Why did you watch that? I thought I warned you about horror movies, especially at night,” she scolded softly.“Where was your nanny? She’s supposed to censor you.”

ORSON’S POV Elora Amoh! The name had replayed in my head for years. For so many years. It stuck in my mind like that incident—the beautiful, innocent little Elora who would never hurt a bee. For so long, I had stayed in the shadows, watching her like a hawk, the guilt from years before threatening to tear my heart apart.

“Well I’ll tell you what. I know I’m not as good as your Mommy, but I’ll nap with you if you want?” He nods again, and I give him a squeeze, trying to pour all the love in my heart into his small body. I feel a tug on my dress, and I look down to find another pup hovering at my side.
