“The Heart does not create bonds from love.” The corridor became deathly silent. “It creates them from necessity.” Aria stared at him in disbelief. “No.” The King’s smile faded completely now. “You think destiny chose you and the Alpha because your souls belong together?” His silver eyes darkened painfully. “The Heart chooses wolves useful enough to sustain its survival.” The words crashed through the underground district harder than any physical attack. Even Ronan looked shaken. The King slowly pointed toward the glowing Heart chamber behind them. “That thing feeds on bonded souls.”

I didn't know how to respond to that, the weight of his words heavy on my heart. "It sucks being you right now," he said with a wry smile, and I nodded in agreement. "Indeed it does, but my heart belongs to Tristan," I said firmly, meeting his gaze. Alec nodded a look of understanding and perhaps a hint of sympathy in his eyes. "That much is clear. I just hope he can see it too," Alec said, and I couldn't help but smile at him, grateful for his honesty and support. "Alphas," I said, rolling my eyes, and we both laughed again. It was a fleeting moment of normalcy in the midst of chaos, a reminder that even in the darkest times, there could be light.

I inquired. As he chuckled lightly, the blue-eyed man said, "I'm Daunte Rosellini, Alpha of the Onyx Fang Pack. Although I had told Hector that I would arrive at the end of the week, I have other issues to discuss," he answered, "And you are?" As I was about to respond, Hector's voice echoed down the hall, "Daunte, I see you met my mate," he said as he kissed my forehead. "Your mate, huh? What is her name, or should I call her MATE?" Alpha Daunte laughed.

I pressed a hand to my chest where the bond pulsed sharp, painful, and confusing. Mate. He was my mate. And he rejected me. The pain wasn’t merely emotional. My heart forgets to beat for a second. The body of Alpha Kryptos arcs out as claws appear through his chest from behind. Something struck him. Blood flows through the side of his lips as his eyes widen. And like a statue, he falls face flat on the floor. Revealing behind him is the Alpha of the Rogue. He stands bare in his almost shifting form, holding the heart of Alpha Kryptos in his hand. His whole body is clothed in blood. His light blue eyes burn like fire. No one will know the actual color of his eyes as fire replaces blue. He throws the heart of Alpha Kryptos to the floor, stamping on it with his feet. The heart splashes in pieces.

He who I have been running from was already here unannounced, staring deep into my soul like he did that night. I had been running for so long, hiding from the Alpha's song, the one that calls out to my soul, haunting my dreams. The one that won't let me go. But now I found myself face-to-face, With the Alpha's powerful grace, His eyes, a piercing, steely red, A wolf who knows what he must do. I tried to run, to flee once more, But his gaze held me to the floor, his glare registered in my space, then I know I cannot leave this place.

Her glow flickers. My heart stops cold. "No!" I scream. "Sophia, don’t listen to him!" She snaps her head toward me, her big blue-green eyes wet and terrified. "Mama—it hurts! Make it stop!" I slam my fists against the invisible barrier, pouring every ounce of my power outward, desperate to sever the ritual’s hold on her. The Alpha grins. "And here we go—" A deafening SNARL rips through the clearing. My heart jolts—because I know that sound. It’s the sound of fury given form. The sound of death crashing through the dark.
