For a heartbeat, I thought he might snap—but instead, he strode to me, kneeling so our eyes locked. His hand hovered near my cheek, stopping just shy of touching me. “I will not let him take you. Not alive.” The meaning was clear. A promise. A threat. Both. Before I could answer, the crash of the front gates rattled the house.
