I chuckle a little, feeling how happy and proud both Embry and Ash feel at Raven’s compliment. “I felt Raven waking up, and right now I want my mates,” Embry links all of us, when Raven mindlessly runs her fingers over his ears and through his soft fur.

"I am thirsty." Lycan barked a laugh. "Very well, Rava. But be warned, the water you receive will not be what you expect." With a flick of his wrist, he gestured to one of his followers, who brought forward a skin filled with water. Rava reached for it, but as she raised it to her lips, she could smell something strange and bitter. "Drink it," Lycan ordered, his voice cold. She hesitated, but she was so thirsty that she couldn't resist. She took a sip of the water, and immediately gasped in pain. It was the most bitter thing she had ever tasted, and it seemed to burn her throat and mouth.

To me, Lucas was a rather slimy bastard. But just then, from the corner of my eyes, I caught sight of Raven's ragged body. Her fur colour was beginning to change from brown to the ink-black colour of her hair. She was transforming. I quickly pulled off my coat and rushed to wrap her in it. I was going to avoid confrontation with Lucas for now; there was something more immediate to attend.

Ever since the lights blew out during dance practice, people had been spinning stories. Some said it was a freak accident. Some swore they saw sparks jump from me like I was some kind of human fuse box. Others whispered I was cursed, or worse….claimed. I didn’t realize anything was wrong until I opened my locker and a folded piece of paper fluttered out, hitting the floor. My stomach twisted before I even picked it up. Notes in Ravenfalls never meant good things. Choose or they’ll destroy each other. That was it, no signature, and no neat handwriting to trace back. Just sharp, rushed letters, like the writer had been too impatient to sit still.

The isolation that had once been about survival was now about peace. Raven sat on the porch swing, a laptop balanced on her knees as she worked on the book that had become her passion project. The working title was "Justice Served Cold: A Story of Redemption and Revenge," though she was still debating whether to publish it under her real name or maintain the fiction of Raven Steele.

“Because I’m not Iris, you cold bastard!” Her words hung in the air like a bomb that had just exploded. Behind the glass, I felt my entire world stop. What? Lucas released a long breath and leaned back in his chair. He had a grim expression on his face, but he looked unsurprised, like this was exactly what he had expected to hear. “Well,” Lucas said quietly. “I wish I could say it’s good to hear from you, Raven.” Raven. The name hit me like a physical blow.

Every crack of a twig made my claws itch. Across the fire, Ava shifted, a soft murmur escaping her lips. She tucked her knees up under her cloak, hair spilling across her face. For a moment, just a moment, she looked peaceful. My chest tightened, and I tore my gaze away before Ryn noticed and made some smart comment. The night dragged. My body wanted sleep but my mind wouldn’t let it. By the time the horizon blushed pale gray, my eyes burned like fire. “Lucas,” Ryn said from where he leaned against a tree, voice low but sharp. “You didn’t close your eyes once.”

We still couldn’t make out the message carved into the metal. I exhaled slowly, carefully, keeping my expression neutral as I looked back at the children. Leo laughed softly at something on the screen. Matteo leaned closer to his sister, shielding her without knowing he was doing it. Thalia’s fingers remained tangled in the doll’s dress, her small body relaxed against Rachel. “The Ravens didn’t appreciate the Gavies assisting us,” Mr. Vance said quietly. His voice was calm, but tight. “They want us cornered.” My jaw set.

Jake began to feel a strange compulsion and could not look away from the window. The kid's mask continued to droop as Jake felt a dizziness when suddenly, a sharp sound came from the window, pulling Jake out of that weird trance. Jake gasped when he saw a black figure on the window. It was a raven, its beak lodged into the glass and flattering its black wings madly. It was trapped. Jake fell back on the bed and was reaching out for the book when the raven began to caw until it started to sound like a human being screaming. With one last scream, Jake watched the bird explode into a mound of blood, spattering the entire window red.
