I took a deep, shuddering breath, slapped a bright, entirely fake smile onto my face, and hit accept. "Hey!" I said, my voice pitching a half-octave higher than normal. Evans’s face filled the screen. He was sitting on the hood of his Land Rover, the Boston skyline rising behind him. He had a dark purple bruise forming along his left cheekbone, and his hair was damp with sweat, but his green eyes were shining with that familiar, cocky light. "Hey, sunshine," Evans grinned, the sound of his voice instantly sending a painful ache straight through my chest. "Did I catch you in the middle of building an empire?"

Evans' voice was authoritative. Brenda pouted her lips.

She came across something and clicked on it. A short video opened, and the host had a big smile on his face. "Now, let's welcome Mr. Evans to the stage for his speech!" The camera switched to the man on stage. He was well-dressed in a suit, but the warmth in his eyes seemed to have disappeared. “I am Jason Evans. Thank you all for your support of our company's new project. I will continue to work hard." After finishing his speech, he handed the microphone back to the host.

The air felt tighter, harder to breathe. For a moment, no one reacted. Even the triplets' expressions shifted drastically. They hadn't expected defiance. They certainly hadn't expected this. "I, Evan Norwood, stand upright in this world," he continued, voice calm but cutting. "I repay kindness when it's given. I am grateful to the heavens, to the earth, and to my parents. But you are not my parents—and you're far from worthy of being called my family. I had thought three years might have humbled you. Instead, you've only gotten worse."
