A life spent looking backwards misses all the beauty that lies in front of it. Your parents aren’t perfect. You might have realize this. But you’re pretty darn smart. So, like I said before, we have to forgive ourselves or the coulda, woulda, shoulda, fear and anxiety will creep into a crack of our weaknesses, and overcome us. Please know we’re not perfect, and we will never claim to be. Our personal journeys have stories to tell. THAT’S for sure. When it comes time for stories, though, talk to me first… because chances are your father’s are going to be inappropriate. HA!

Holly shakes her head slightly. “It’s not really a trick,” she says calmly. “You just have to be careful about the information you use. Only use facts to support your argument.” Her finger taps the paper lightly. “There are a lot of stories out there about the side effects of being a shifter. Personal stories. Rumors. People talking about what happened to them or someone they know.” She pauses for a moment. “But most of those stories are not proven. Very little of it has been properly recorded as fact.”

Lovingman: “So what is it you need to know?” Curious: “There is so much, and I only know that I am not happy the way I am.” I was given directions on how to enter a private chat room with lovingman, and after a few clicks of the mouse, we were the only ones there. Lovingman: “So, babe. Tell me your story.” I was taken aback by his familiarity, but it had been so long, and this seemed anonymous enough, so I proceeded to pour out my life to this complete stranger. It took almost three hours of typing and his encouragement until I had fully unloaded my crappy life onto his shoulders.

"We won't have you around much longer before you head back to school. Why don't you tell us some stories about your summer classes?" That went better than I expected. You see, my dad is a great storyteller. I'm sure when he retold some of my little anecdotes from college to his co-workers, they came out much better than when I told the same stories. Still, I was able to be entertaining and informative. It made me smile when I could coax a laugh out of them.

Oh, the stories I had piled up to share with them. Stories of the enchanting forest, shimmering with snow, tales of danger and guarded secrets, kisses that sealed promises, and the soft ache of heartbreak that eventually receded into healing. I would tell them about the time I barked at a stranger who cast a lingering glance at Makayla, making sure that my girls felt protected. I’d share tales of how I divided snacks with Lilac and cozied up between them whenever they forgot how to find peace in sleep.

Counselors told ghost stories with dramatic voices, making the younger kids squeal and cling to each other. I sat cross-legged on the ground, Daniel right beside me. His knee brushed mine every time he shifted, and though I told myself it was nothing, I couldn’t stop noticing it. I tried to keep my eyes on the fire, but my gaze kept slipping sideways. The glow of the flames painted his face in sharp lines his jaw, the curve of his nose, the easy way his lips curved into a smile when he laughed at a silly story. My heart did that flip again, stronger this time. I swallowed hard, staring at the fire as if it could distract me.

They didn’t want a theoretical treatise; they wanted hope with dirt under its fingernails. We told our story. Not as a polished narrative, but as a series of vignettes. Lanc talked about boots full of mud and the weight of a shovel. Chloe talked about the hollow fear in a paycheck’s absence and the fierce solidarity that filled it. Arthur mapped our tactics on a whiteboard with detached academic flair, calling our approach “asymmetrical narrative engagement.” When it was my turn, I stood, my notes trembling in my hands. I looked at the expectant faces and heard Mrs. Henderson’s voice: a campfire story.

“Hearing that explains much more about why he has been on edge recently. Do you really think the stories he was told as a kid will help you?” Lindsay asked Wren. “Maybe. Folklore is commonly based on actual events or creatures that were not easily explained. If you haven’t noticed, we have had quite a few things come up without records. If Viktor can even give us an idea about some of them, then that is more than we have now,” Wren explained.

She turned the page, her fingers tracing the edges of the paper. The next entry was dated, and the ink was a deep, vivid red. It was a story, told in the first person, of an encounter that took place in a dimly lit alley behind a bar. The atmosphere was thick with tension, a charged current that seemed to vibrate in the air. Pinky leaned in closer, her heart skipping a beat as she read the words.
