It would never be a ring. I pop open the midnight blue box, and again I’m wrong. Actually, I don’t even know what this stuff is. It is just like a huge spider with a purple gem. The spider legs are silver, glinting just as much as the dark purple gem. I try to look for a note, anything that figures out what it is. I see a note like I expected, and when I read it, it says, “This brooch is very expensive. I walk to my dresser and pull out a box wrapped in brown paper and tied with string. “I made this for you.” I say as I hand her the package. A smile creeps across Mari’s face. She gently peels back the paper. She pulls the small clutch bag from the package and examines the details. The bag is a simple cream colored linen with cranes embroidered in a beautiful scene. “You know how I adore cranes.” She gushed. “Look inside.” I say. She opened the clutch to reveal the night stars stitched along a crescent moon. “It’s the constellation Cetus.” I explain. “A sea monster. What better thing to guard your valuables.” I joke.

“She made her choice, Beatrice. We’ve got to move—Velan’s scouts could be on us any second!” I nod, tears stinging, but my legs wobble as we stagger forward. Then I see them, Alarica the massive black Friesian unicorn with a rainbow crystal horn gleaming in the moonlight, and Charlie, my tri-colored dog, brown, white, and black, with those deep eyes that always seem to see right through me. He’s wagging his tail, but I hear his voice in my head, smooth and teasing, “Well, well, Beatrice, my sweet hybrid queen, you’re a sight for sore eyes. And Alarica, those legs, that horn it’s simply divine!”

An idea came to me then; this would suit Adrian well, and I recognized it immediately as a good luck charm for warriors. “What’s that?” he asked, leaning in closer to get a good look. “Oh, this?” I followed his gaze down to the small amulet on a chain; the amulet was in the shape of a crescent moon made of pure gold. “It’s supposed to be a good luck charm for warriors. I was…” I looked over at him and felt my eyelashes flutter of their own accord beneath Adrian’s steady gaze. “I was actually going to get it for you,” I finally said, holding it out to him.

Recognizing the quality of Adrian’s weapon, Gallahan sneered. "You’re gonna use such a trashy weapon?" Gallahan then drew his own weapon and flaunted it, unaware that Adrian was already focused on it. Adrian shot a cold glance at the other four, warning them not to interfere. The others, recognizing Adrian’s formidable presence and having no strong ties to Gallahan, chose to remain neutral. With a sense of relief, Adrian confidently pulled out a charm and slapped it onto himself to significantly boost his defense. The charm was specially treated and engraved with formations, creating a micro-formation that enhanced both offensive and defensive abilities.
