Thunder rumbled far off in the distance—deep and guttural, the way anger sounds when it’s too old to scream anymore. We drove past a field of wild grass, where fireflies blinked like forgotten souls, pulsing green in the dark. Their glow made my chest ache for reasons I didn’t have the strength to unpack. Memories came rushing back—fragments of the happiest days of my life. Days that once felt eternal, now reduced to nothing more than echoes in the corners of my mind. Just memories… nothing more.

The forest burned. Night bled into the glow of flames as shadows twisted between trees, the hiss of embers and the crackle of splintering bark louder than the screams. The cavern was bathed in silver flames. The other three ducked, but quickly realized there was no need. An invisible barrier protected them from the heatless flames. They stared in awe. Amerie herself was hovering above the water, encased in a shell of sparkling crystal with flames dancing on its surface. Her eyes burned white and her hair fanned out in every direction. A roar escaped her, shaking the cavern.

I didn’t want to blink, I wanted to see it and patch it in my memory. I couldn’t count it, the fireflies flew on it, being the natural light for the waterfall, and it was a sight to see. “They are here now.” I sighed in relief. It was truly a magical sight, I wish I could witness this with Declan and Finn. “I’m glad you got to see this, love.” Luca kissed the side of my head and I nodded. Fireflies are so pretty too back in our Blue Moon pack. Luca stopped for a while, letting us enjoy this beautiful sight together until the sun completely hid under the line of the sky.

I watch his eyes go wide, but his scream is cut off as I open my mouth and send a blast of fire into the crater. I hear the sounds of elves’ screams a moment before I begin to smell their burning flesh. I feel Cal come up behind me, blasting his air against the elves who escaped the crater. One by one, they begin falling into the boiling water as he uses his air to hold them. “Go, Daichi! Get Amaya to Doc Everett,” Avani tells him. I feel my mother and Kaylani fly up beside me, replacing Amaya’s water and my fire when the last of my air leaves my lungs.

Smoke hung in the air, and the room fell into a breathtaking silence. Luna floated, her body bruised and battered. Just as the flame had begun, the smoke moved into her nostrils and began to come out in a rhythm. The amber light surrounded her, moving around like fireflies; it flew above her and stung her in the forehead. Luna's scream echoed around the room; the light passed through her, and from every part it took, scarlet light emitted from it.

Rori looked on in terror as Mina’s eyes began to glow purple, but as she glanced at Kristi, her friend looked like she was in pain. “Leave them alone Mina!” Rori roared and almost as if her anger fueled the flits they appeared to grow in size and intensity. Murdok roared at the top of his lungs and let a large plume of fire escape his throat, attempting to lure the small fire creatures away from the suffering boy, but as the inferno burst free the flames seemed to move on their own and began to swirl around Rori’s body. The flits immediately dropped Mason and swarmed Rori, they buzzed and flew in blurred streaks around her, creating virtually a funnel cloud of flame and heat.
