A deafening roar sounds out, and when I open my eyes, I see the dark smoke hovering above Morana. I don’t see any physical features, but I can feel the absolute hatred this thing encapsulates. Who would worship something like this? When the light fades, Morana collapses to her knees, breathing heavily. Nova steps forward, her expression one of relief. “It’s done,” she says softly. “The Meraloth is gone.”

“What are you not telling me?” For a moment, he looked almost... regretful. “You think defeating the tormentor was a victory,” he said softly. “But it wasn’t. It was the first move in a game you don’t understand. The council doesn’t kill threats—they assimilate them. Or destroy them, if they won’t bend.” Annabel clenched her fists. “Then why am I still alive?” Ash’s voice was quiet but cutting. “Because we need to know. Will you bend, or will you break?”

I slam into one of them and kick the other in the head, then twirl before the one with the knife can stab me in the neck. A gun cocking behind my head makes me stiffen. Nostrils flaring, I raise my hands and get ready to attack, but before I can, the man behind me falls unconscious onto the floor. Turning quickly, I spot one of my fellow Assassins, Phoenix, finishing off the last two men. The hallway looks like a war zone with unconscious bodies lying in various spots on the floor. As soon as the last man is down, we both face each other. “What are you doing here?” We both ask in unison.

At least I was saved. Voices overlapped, full of shouting and arguments. Somewhere nearby, a siren wailed. As my consciousness faded, the last thing I heard was her desperate, breaking voice. "Alexander, you're not allowed to die! I love you! Do you hear me? I love you!" Love? Too late.
