Everyone held their weapons close, ready to put our lives on the line. Explosions and gunshots kept coming from above, and the sound of the walls collapsing was deafening. The ground seemed to tremble under the force. On the fourth day, the noise abruptly stopped. We gathered nervously and stared at the door to the underground shelter. It slowly opened to reveal an exhausted soldier. "The wave of zombies has been dealt with. You can all come out now." Everyone cheered, and we slowly filed out of the shelter. The air outside smelled of gunpowder.

I couldn't make sense of anything the priest was saying. My head was spinning and my heart was beating, not in excitement this time though. I looked at Edwin and widened my one eye at him, hoping he could read the questions there. What was happening? Edwin peered down at me, his expression utterly different from the loving one I knew. And then, he spoke; "I, Edwin Lane, the new Alpha of the Black Blood Pack, reject you, Annalise Altair as my mate and the Luna of this pack." At first, I could only hear the ringing in my head, and then, a searing pain followed as I felt the mate bond between us snap, tearing at my soul and bringing me to the floor.

I knew she was facing something monumental, and I could only hope she was ready for it. Suddenly, the air shifted, and I felt a presence. My breath caught in my throat as a vision unfolded before me. Trees loomed tall, and green vegetation surrounded a group of beings—men, aliens, and animals—all gathered together, united in their purpose. An elder guardian emerged from the midst of them, her aura radiating strength. She stepped forward, her eyes locking onto mine. “You are here, Annalise,” she said, her voice echoing through the clearing. “We have awaited your arrival.”

Alina was faster though. Always had been and always will. She grabbed the glock tucked inside Antonio's holster fast as lightning, her finger steady on the trigger. Two shots cracked. She won and he missed. Kenji Sato's gun clattered to the floor as he screamed, clutching his bleeding hand. Antonio's men got to his own men before any of them could say Jack.

Their cries echoed inside her skull, pounding until she thought her mind would split. Her knees buckled. She nearly fell. “This isn’t death,” she gasped, clutching the oak for support. “This is—” She couldn’t finish. The word choked in her throat. Because she knew. This was not the slow decay of life into death, the natural cycle she had learned to honor. This was not the forest giving itself to rot so it could return anew. This was annihilation. Ripping.
