An orphan pretending to be one of us, those words echoed in my head. I’d heard them before, from children and their parents, from teachers and strangers alike. They were always rearranged differently, but no matter what words were used the meaning remained the same. An outcast, mutilated, unwanted, and unloved…only I wasn’t.
I wasn’t any of those things, and I never had been.
