Why was I standing here like some desperate stalker? Why did I care if she ate? Why did I find myself checking the security feeds just to make sure she was sleeping? I was Bane Valak. I had dismantled empires and executed men without a flicker of hesitation. I was the apex predator in a city filled with wolves. And yet, I found myself paralyzed by the sight of a twenty-five-year-old girl who looked like she’d break if I breathed on her too hard. It was supposed to be simple. Through the floor-to-ceiling windows, I looked out at the apartment building in the distance. Flames were shooting into the sky, and faint screams carried through the air. Linda and Tyler had hidden from the zombies by climbing into a dumpster downstairs. They were curled up in the reeking trash, shivering as they fought over half a moldy bread roll someone had thrown away. Meanwhile, I took a sip of hot soup, warmth spreading through my whole body. This was what apocalypse life was supposed to feel like. Over the next three days, I followed Duke’s guidance and swept up supplies from nearly half the city.

“That man is the most dangerous criminal of our world and you want to go into his lair? Have you no regard for your safety?” I spun to face him as I growled. “Don’t you say a word about my father!” I shot back at him. “He was a criminal, but he longer is. He is still my father and do you think he will kill me?” “He won't kill you, Natasha!” Apollo came to stand in front of me and grabbed my upper arms. “He won't kill you. But he is eyeing Lucas. He will take my child away. Your father will take away you from me. You are mine! Do you get it!” He shook me hard as darkness marred his features. “And I will raze this world down if anyone tries to take you away from me or my child!”

For weakness was meant to be trampled upon; to be molded into strength. The year was 101A; 101 years after the apocalypse. The apocalypse started like any other apocalypse – by human hands. And the prime culprit was the Emperor of Darkness. A man who was also known by the titles Beast Emperor and Death Killer. For he emerged from the abyss men had dug for him with an army so vast that the world above couldn’t contain it. He was a man who wasn’t a man. He was a being who wasn’t a being. He was wrath itself. A deafening, earth-shattering detonation ripped through the hundred-foot-thick glacial roof of the throne room. Valerius’s head snapped up, his abyssal eyes widening in genuine, unprecedented shock. The entire vaulted ceiling of the Necropolis caved in. Thousands of tons of solid black ice, shattered permafrost, and burning rock rained down into the throne room, obliterating the ancient pillars and entirely crushing Valerius’s frozen throne into dust. And falling right through the center of the apocalyptic debris, like a god of war cast down from the heavens, was King Silas Vane.

I mutter. He never lets me in on the action. “But you mentioned snakes at dinner. I assumed he had told you.” I raise an eyebrow, folding my arms. “Listen to me Ice. Apophis is the God of Darkness. He is symbolised by snakes, he himself is said to be a great serpent. You know, the enemy of the Sun God? I know my stuff.” I shrug. He’s watching me, as if thinking through what I had said extremely carefully, but then he exhales and shakes his head.

Huge holographic billboards projected the face of a man I didn't recognize—a man with silver-grey hair and eyes as sharp and predatory as a falcon’s. ​"That’s him," Silas whispered, his voice crackling with static over the internal comms of our transport. "The Iron King. To the world, he is Julian Vane, the great philanthropist who rebuilt the power grid after the 'Great Outage.' To us, he is the gatekeeper of the apocalypse, the man holding the keys to the world's survival."

“What do you mean, Samael?” He rose to lean against the bar. “I mean,” he said slowly, “that nothing in Heaven's powers and those vested in the gods can stop this. Humanity's prophecies are coming true. The Kali Yuga, the Third Great Shaking, the Apocalypse, but not in the manner you imagine. John Lennon's song is precisely right. You are witnessing the end of an age.” He walked over to the jukebox and keyed up a song:

No longer cloaked in the beauty of his delusion his beastly appearance was visible to the world. “And you are one ugly son of a bitch.” Lucifer reeled and Gabriel took his chance. He lunged forward but Lucifer let out a roar so powerful it blew him tumbling back toward the tree line. The Reapers leaped to their feet swords at the ready. “This world and everything in it is going to burn,” Lucifer seethed. “For I am the apocalypse!”

Colson knelt on the ground and said sadly, “Lord Evil, Sun God Apollo showed up at my bar and killed Rick Michael.” Hearing that, Vataco, who was eating fruits, suddenly sat up straight. The face of this handsome man contained evil and charming coldness, while his eyes were blue, just like the waves of the sea. He had well-defined delicate facial features, and one might even mistake him for a woman. With a piercing chill in his eyes, he stared at Colson and asked, “Apollo showed up at your bar?” “Yes, Lord Vataco,” Colson replied. Vataco waved his hand casually, and all the sexy women dispersed.
