“Where?” I didn’t get a chance to answer him before Daunator let us all know. The ground beneath their feet began to shake violently. The holes were opening up, and I knew that the ones where we were standing were occupied by fully-formed monsters, ones that had been incubating here for hundreds of years. They were climbing out of the holes the same way they scaled the sides of buildings. I didn’t have to see them to know that. I could hear them coming. “Run!” Aaron shouted at my sister, pushing her back in the direction from which we’d come.

“Apollo, maximum speed! We won't be able to beat them. There are too many of them!” Apollo was suddenly nervous. “But in front of a dead end, sir. I took the wrong route earlier.” “Damn it! Back off then! Back off!” Apollo tried to back off. The sheer number of monsters around them made him shudder. Their claws and fangs secreted poison and some were even corrosive and very dangerous. “Just hit them!” Liam ordered furiously. "We have to get out of here!" Apollo was confused but he tried to obey Liam's orders. He reversed his car and crashed into the monsters that were blocking them. Some of the monsters tried to reach Liam, but if that happened then Liam would punch them.

I said lightly. “Have you gotten used to it?” “Sort of. Still figuring things out.” I paused. “I told you about the recent deaths, right?” She nodded, her brows drawing together. “Yeah. Vampires and wolves, right?” “Three in total,” I said, my voice quieter now. “All of them found on the outskirts. Burnt. But not by sunlight. It wasn’t natural. The smell lingers even after they’re moved. Like scorched flesh and ash soaked into the ground.”

His hand lifted, hovered just inches from the handle. If he turned it , if he stepped inside there’d be no undoing it. Not this time. He could finish what they started. Bury himself so deep inside that mouth, inside that want, that for a few hours, he wouldn’t have to think about betrayal and bloodlines and wedding vows. He could forget. But the thing about monsters was they followed you, even after the lights went out. And Rafael already knew, no matter how hard he tried to kill this thing between them, it wouldn’t stay buried.

A scout staggered inside, his cloak torn, blood smeared down one arm, eyes wide with shellshock. “Alpha Rhax! Lady Perfera!” he gasped. “The eastern village—it's gone. We tried to hold the line, but—” “Speak clearly, soldier,” Elder Cael snapped, standing from his seat. “What happened?!” “They’re… they’re turning them, my lord.” His voice cracked. “The monsters aren’t just killing anymore.
