Lyra's pov I found it in the medical reference book. Not under the pillow, not in the herb basket, not anywhere I had learned to check — but inside the front cover of the thick reference volume I used every single day, the one that lived on the center table of the healing house and had Vera's name written in faded ink on the first page and had been handled by every healer in this pack for the better part of a decade, and I found it when I opened the book to check a compound ratio mid-morning with Vera two feet away at the cabinet behind me.

He was handsome beyond reasonable doubt, and I envied the woman who would get to call him hers. “You asked for me?” I asked, doing my best to sound unaffected by his presence. He nodded and then beckoned me closer. I strode to his desk and he pointed at a green worn-out diary. “As promised,” he said simply. “The past born healer’s diary,” I said in awe, as if it held all the answers already. I reached out a hand and took it cautiously. It was rather thin. “The first of many,” he said softly while looking at me. “Once you finish it, come find me and I’ll give you the next one.”

“Why in the world was I even caught up into this mess?” I was surprised I was talking to myself but it would seem I was not done yet as I even added, “Now I even ended up becoming an apothecary luna.” with a disheartened sigh in the end. The scent of dried herbs filled the room as I leaned over the small table, meticulously measuring ingredients with trembling hands. The steady rhythm of my mortar and pestle grinding roots into a fine powder was the only sound, a therapeutic contrast to the chaos in my mind.

Neutral Ground The apothecary looked like it had been dead for a century. Its wooden shutters sagged inward, nails bent with rust, and the faded sign above the door (Elderwick Remedies) hung by a single chain that groaned whenever the wind pressed against it. Dusty glass jars lined the window, filled with herbs that had long since rotted into powder. I tightened my cloak around my shoulders, every step up the cracked cobblestones screaming louder in my head than it did in the air.
