April collapsed unto the couch, figuring out how to make amends. She wished she hadn't gotten out of her room to peel apples, it all started with the damn apples. After about half an hour, April got up and went upstairs. She stared at Iver's door for a few seconds before she finally approached it. She knocked on his door and when there was no reply, she tried opening the door but it was locked. She knew he was inside and had locked the door. "Iver," April called. "I want to be alone," he replied from inside.

She shook her head in disbelief and disappointment at Beatrice. “You don’t understand. I'm uninterested in learning anything more about you. I know you’re nothing.” Her grey streaked hair shifted out of place as her emotional state continued to take a nosedive. “Oh, then perhaps I should take my gift back too as I leave. Yes, everyone will love that.” April said. She went to the now open closet that Beatrice had left open. Her blonde hair lay damp on her shoulder. She pulled out her suitcase.

As I hoped, they were all books written by April Dove. “Why did you buy these? I didn’t tell you about them.” I gasped, taking out the books one at a time at a snail’s pace, enjoying the wonderful euphoria feeling that was so wonderful. I had only told him about The Pink Hearts And Sunshine series and not the others. So why did he get them?

A few days later, inside a quiet library across town, April rushed in, books clutched tightly to her chest. She wasn’t paying attention since she was in a hurry and suddenly…she collided with someone. “Oh!” Books scattered across the floor. “I’m so sorry!” she said quickly, kneeling to pick them up. “Same here,” a voice replied. She looked up and damn…he was… handsome. “I’m Gavin,” he said, smiling slightly. “April,” she replied, avoiding his gaze.

When his tiny hand slips into mine, I tighten my hold on him and walk to the front door. We step out onto the sidewalk, and I lock up behind us. “Heading home?” April asks from where she’s having a cigarette. She’s a barista at the coffee shop next to my bookstore, Alexander Bookstore. “Yeah. Have a good night.” I smile at her before I walk toward the car. April once asked me to go out for a girls' night with her, but I used Vincent as an excuse to decline the invitation. She’s friendly and always greets me, but I like my quiet life with my son, and there isn’t space for anyone else.

The ladies all giggle and Julie stands, handing a new bookmark to each of us. "Yes. We figured we'd get you ones that suited you a little better." she says. The new one is dark blue with gold lettering that says 'Real men read dirty books'. I smile and look over at Ev who's showing Harper his excitedly. "These are great. Thank you." I say just as Bri nudges me. "Oh! Tell them your joke, love!" Harper says excitedly. Ev rolls his eyes before addressing the group.

FORBIDDEN FLAMES 2 ARIA’S POV The text from Serena arrives just as I flip the café sign to CLOSED, the soft click of the lock echoing in the empty space. My hands still tremble from the day, every customer interaction felt like a distraction from the memory of her mouth on mine yesterday, her fingers teasing me to the edge in the storage closet before pulling back with that wicked smile.
