Chapter 2: House Rules The house felt different the next morning. Elias woke up with a sore throat and swollen lips. His wrists still carried faint red marks from where Damien had pinned them. He lay in bed for a long time, staring at the ceiling, heart pounding as last night replayed in vivid, humiliating detail. The rough kiss. It shows her family being murdered as well as video proof of what they did to her.” Dex sighed. “I don’t think you should watch it… you know given your current state.”

During the day, I meandered through the stations at the workshop, the noise of the machines and equipment drowning out everything else. Marie Lewitt's machine had stopped. Sometimes, I find the wait more enjoyable than the action itself. I can almost taste the victory on my tongue. Derek stands. “Prepare,” he says simply. Just like that, the meeting is over. Caleb shuts off the projection and River gathers his files. As I head for the door, Caleb falls into step beside me. “You’re unusually quiet,” he says, nudging my shoulder lightly. “That can either mean you’re thinking something good or bad. Usually it’s the latter.” I don’t look at him. “You’re wrong.”
