The moment I spoke the truth, the body dissolved into a cloud of purple smoke. The blood on my hands vanished, leaving my skin completely clean.
The heavy fog stirred, and a shadow stepped out from behind a black tree. But it wasn't Marcus.
It was a female warrior in dark silver armor, holding two long, curved daggers. Her eyes were completely black, controlled by the forest magic. One of the ten Northern warriors sent to hunt me down.
"You cleared the illusion faster than the rest," she hissed, her voice sounding like grinding stones. "But clear eyes won't save your throat."
