Instead, he looked away toward the forest and said, “I understand.”
Those two words surprised me.
Magnus leaned against the opposite side of the railing, his large body covered by the moonlight.
“For centuries, people have looked at me and seen nothing except a monster.”
His voice was calm, but there was something tired underneath it.
“They bow because they fear me. They respect my title because they want something from me. Some want my protection. Others want my power. But almost nobody cares about the person underneath all of that.”
