“I didn’t get the chance to thank you.” Her breath shook. “Thank me? You kissed me without my permission,” she whispered. “You scared me. And now—now you’re here? Why? What do you want from me?” The corner of his mouth tilted, almost amused. “So you know who I am.” “You’re Adriano Greco,” she said, her voice trembling. “The monster people talk about.” He took another step closer. “Monster?” he repeated softly. “That’s what they call me?”

They were probably confident no one could ever escape or survive this place. We climbed up a stone staircase, moving quickly and silently. I was holding the Xenodermus babies we had rescued. We only stopped when we saw light ahead, and the exit from the arena. There, we saw a group of wounded Tarragons battling a huge monster—it looked like a centipede, but more vicious, with spikes along its back. Its many legs were sharp, and its head was massive with enormous, jagged teeth. Vestaria looked at me. “What’s the plan?” she asked. I smiled. I handed the Xenodermus babies to one of the others we had freed. My claws extended, surprising them, and I knew my eyes were glowing.

I looked up and my stomach dropped. Aziel Nightbane. The monster himself. His golden eyes burned down at me with pure hate. Up close he smelled like blood and smoke and something darker that made my wolf stir. “Who are you running from boy?” he growled. His voice was low and rough like gravel under boots. His grip tightened on my arm hard enough to bruise. I gasped for air and forced words out even though my throat felt tight. “Please. I am nothing. Just a slave omega. Let me go and I will disappear. You will never see me again I swear it.”

Arric replied, smiling. "We haven't aged a day, my friend, one of the advantages of being a true Lycanthrope, huh!" he replied. Arric chuckled. Aricel then sobered up and added, "I'm sorry about Alpha Roffe Barther and Marcus. If there's anything you want me to do to help catch Mauro just say the word." Eirika held her breath and lowered her gaze in anxious anticipation. "Thank you," Arric said simply. Aricel nodded and then stepped back, his silver eyes shining with curiosity as he surveyed Eirika. "Maverick, it's an honor to have you in our territory with your beautiful and courageous Luna," he said with a respectful nod.

I ran through the possibilities in my head. Based on everything I'd observed so far, the monster's kill condition was either three consecutive exchanges in a conversation or agreeing to—or refusing—all of its requests three times in a row. If that was true, then I had a way out. Next time I faced it, I'd follow one pattern: agree once, stay silent once, refuse once. That way, no matter which theory was right, I'd dodge the condition entirely. Of course… if both guesses were wrong, I'd just have to accept my fate.

Mama sighed heavily, and then she smiled at the young Aricka. “No, I always like your skin color and red hair, my baby. You bring us luck, you and Louelle, and I'm thankful that you're both growing up kind,” Mama said, while stroking young Aricka's hair. Even if I am just watching I couldn’t help but feel her caresses my hair. As if she was holding me and not that child.
