"Miss Aurora? Are you alright?" The nurse's voice snapped me out of my daze. I opened my eyes to see blood backing up in the IV line. A stark, dark red blood was backing up against the tubing, and it was quite scary. "How long has it been like this?" My voice was hoarse. "About seven hours." The nurse replaced the IV carefully, her tone cautious. "Why wasn't anyone watching you? Your arm is already swollen. Luckily, there's no infection."

It was my second blood draw today, so I gave the doctor my left hand and hid the marks on my right arm that had been left behind by the needle previously. As blood flowed from my arm into the tube, I trembled violently, and my face scrunched up. Perhaps my face had turned ghastly as the doctor asked worriedly, "Are you okay?" I struggled to answer through the pain and dizziness and managed to grit out, "I'm fine." The doctor sighed at my stubbornness but continued to draw blood from my arm.

"May I?" I nod, he then places the tourniquet on my arm. Then, once he finds a vein, he pierces it with the needle, then attaches the syringe. He quickly draws enough blood from me. He takes out the needle, places it on the tray. He then removed the band and placed a bandage over my small wound. He then places the blood in three different vials. One turns pink. "What does that mean?" I asked as I stared at the pink vial.

"Please. Don't make this harder than it needs to be." I looked at the needle in her hand. My vision blurred slightly. Then I sat. Elara moved efficiently. She rolled up my sleeve, tied a rubber tourniquet around my upper arm, and wiped the inside of my elbow with an alcohol swab. The smell was sharp, antiseptic. "This will sting," she said. I didn't respond. The needle pierced my skin. I flinched, holding my breath for a minute. For a moment, nothing happened. Just the strange, uncomfortable pull of blood leaving my body and filling the vial.

He stood up instantaneously and walked up to him, “Are you not feeling well?” “The pain only gets worse. It was only a superficial wound. Why does it hurt so bad?” However, before he could finish complaining, the shock overwhelmed his expression. His arm turned blue. The surrounding area also swelled up. Riley’s eyes went wide in horror, “What the fuck? Why does it turn blue? Let’s go to the hospital. You need a thorough check-up. It is not looking good.”

I whispered, “Let’s... stick with that.” His mouth twitched at that, barely there, like he didn’t quite believe me, like he didn’t quite believe himself either. “Yeah,” he echoed, quieter. Then, neither of us spoke, he simply straightened just enough to reach for the silver tube again. “This is for swelling,” he said. His thumb flipped the cap open with a soft click. “And it will also reduce bruising, keeps the blood from pooling under the skin.” I managed to give him a little nod, "Mhm..."

“For formalities sake, I would be needing to get a blood sample from you to make sure that you do have Alpha blood. Alright?” Amara was prepared for this. Immediately, she extends her arm towards Lady Vita. “Okay.” Lady Vita grabbed her arm and with something that looked like a pen, she clicked it on Amara’s forefinger. The pain wasn’t something that seemed new to her. Amara didn’t even feel much of it. It just felt like a sting of something, like an ant bite. While her professor seemed to be busy extracting blood from her, Amara did something she does best.

I stepped behind the curtain and dressed down taking a seat on the low mesh cot. Calling the person who entered a nurse would have been a misjudgment. This soldier was hardly someone with bedside manners or who could have once called my mother a co-worker. They acted as if not getting done in a timely manner was going to see them killed. Their hands grabbed my arm, twisting it to better suit their needs as they tied a rubber band to my upper arm to draw blood. “Up.” He spoke shortly and then turned to a clipboard as the blood runned out into a bag to my side, “Age?”

"Mrs. Rollins, it's time for your blood draw." She hovered over the back of my hand, trying to find a vein. She missed on her first attempt. As a drop of blood welled up on my skin, she hastily pressed a cotton swab over it. "Sorry. I'm so sorry." She moved to another spot, her hands shaking even harder this time. She pierced straight through a vein on her second try. A sharp pain shot through me. Cold sweat broke out across my forehead. Unable to take it anymore, I snapped in anger, "Get out."

“Uh . . . you?” He shook his head. “No, you weren’t talking to me.” I pulled off the last vial and pressed a cotton ball over the needle. I pulled it out more hastily than usual, and Reed hissed. “Sorry about that. Here, hold this,” I said, and Reed pressed down on the cotton ball. His eyes were still trying to catch mine, but I made a big show of gathering all of my paperwork together. “So you know the drill, Reed Taylor. Drink lots of water; don’t use this arm to lift anything heavy. If there’s any strange bruising or a painful lump that arises . . . ”
