I should get off the floor and get back to bed. Lifting my arms from my knees, I looked down but stopped when I saw the inside of my elbow, where Sara had drawn blood. Dark blue veins were visible around the area where she had drawn blood. I might have never had my blood drawn like this, but I knew damn well that it wasn’t normal. “Shit. Shit. Shit. Shit.” I repeated in my head as I stared at it. Maybe I wasn’t pregnant, and I had been infected. Panicked, I began looking over my body for signs that I had been scratched or bitten. I didn’t see anything out of the ordinary when I was in the shower last, but I figured I missed something.

A series of struggles later, Blair’s fever finally went away after an infusion in the afternoon. Despite that, Mable was worried and stayed by his side. Blair’s arms were covered with hives due to the allergy. They were particularly itchy, but he could not scratch them. Mable put some cream on his arms to reduce the swelling and stop the itching. She studied his arms at the same time. Blair’s blood had been drawn twice a day recently, and it was heartbreaking to look at the needle marks. Suddenly, Blair placed his warm hand on Mable’s head.

He leaned closer this time, frowning. One of the nurses angled a brighter light toward her arm. The dark marking reacted, It shifted. Spreading slightly higher.

He pulled out a rubber tourniquet from his kit and tied it around my upper arm. "That feel tight enough?" He asked. I nodded, watching as he pulled out a blood bag and rubber tubing, attaching the two together. I swallowed hard when he pulled out the butterfly needle. He must have seen my eyes widen because he chuckled. "It will only pinch for a second. Do you want to hold the rubber ball?" I nodded and smiled as he handed me the small red ball. He attached the needle to the tub and took my arm in his hand. I closed my eyes tight as he put the needle to my skin. I winced as I felt the sting.

She was woozy, so she decided to lie back on the bed instead of sitting up for the blood draw. “Just a little poke now.” A millisecond later, the needle pierced her arm, and while it was uncomfortable, it wasn’t as bad as she had psyched herself up to expect. After another moment, Kira pulled out the needle and quickly bandaged the spot. “There we go. Now open your mouth, North.” North complied, allowing Kira to scrape the side of her cheek with a long swab. The other woman stored it in a clear tube before turning to Carol to repeat the process. “Let me rush these to the lab, and then I’ll get you over for a scan.”

Her touch is gentle, but my pulse skitters wildly under her fingertips.
