I was going to do something I'd regret. So I needed a distraction. I wandered into the study. The scent of old books instantly wrapped around me. Running my fingers across the shelves, I picked one at random and settled into a chair by the window. Soon... The story pulled me in. Hours slipped by unnoticed. The book was fascinating enough to make me forget everything else. When I finally looked up... Darkness had already settled outside. The windows reflected only my own face. August still wasn't back. By now, the housekeepers had all gone home.

“Why is it this book…” She was holding ‘A Brief History of Time’. Seeing that he was frowning as if he had thought of something unpleasant, she smiled and closed the book. She put the book back in its original position. “It’s almost time for dinner. I’ll go down and see how Mrs. Winstead’s preparations are going.” XXX

The group held its collective breath as he parted the book slightly. The spine of the book creaked but held. The paper seemed to be leaf like and he wondered in which century the book was written. The pages were faded though still legible. Numerous drawings had lost their intensity but the images remained clear. The buzz of excitement in the air was tangible. “How long will it take to get to the first page?” Aquina whispered to Beecher. “At this pace, our grandkids might learn the secrets.” He winked as he said it, and she caught the double entendre.

"There are more than ten tunnels on this route. The one up ahead is the longest. It takes a full three minutes to pass through!" The moment I heard that, I looked at Phoebe excitedly. She froze for a moment, too, seemingly understanding what I was thinking. After a brief hesitation, she shyly gave a small nod. Three minutes might not be long, but it was more than enough. "Ready?" I asked quietly. I could tell that Phoebe had already reached her limit. Her body felt softer as she leaned into my arms. Phoebe nodded. However, her hand unconsciously rested against the front of my pants.

“Yeah. You’ll need this for your book anyway, right?” My breath caught between relief and emotion. “Thank you ” Liam smiled faintly, then looked at the book in my hands. “Let’s get lunch now.” I blinked quickly and checked the watch on my wrist. My eyes widened. “Oh my God it’s almost one.” I couldn’t believe how fast time had passed. It felt like I’d only entered the library ten minutes ago. Liam stepped closer, gathered the few books he was holding, and walked toward the counter. I followed behind him, carrying the beautiful-covered book, afraid that if I let go, it might disappear.

There was no time to make him dinner. Still, I nodded. I could change my flight to 10 p.m. and let that meal be my last goodbye.
