The next morning, a pup was born in a village 3 days walk away. Gray moon. One gray spot. Name: Ash. Ash was different from the start. He didn’t want to tell stories. He wanted to listen to them. Ash grew up quiet. He sat with elders until their voices gave out. He sat with pups until they fell asleep mid-sentence. He sat with warriors who had no words left, just scars. He didn’t speak much. When someone finished a story, he’d touch their moon. And the memory would glow a little brighter. Like he was keeping it warm.

She tried to explain. “No, it’s not,” He shook his head. “You are important to me and besides we really actually are like kids ourselves so watching kid movies is no big deal. Raze and Asher love Pokémon so they are going to love watching them with your little one. Why didn’t you tell me you had a kid anyway?” “Oh yeah, the Pokémon movie and first season box set!” Asher said excitedly, “We HAVE to bring these, okay Little One? We have to watch these!” Lilly giggled while Daemon chuckled.

“You weren’t authorized.” The man grins. “I never am.” I recognize him before he speaks again. Not by face—by weight. By the way the city pulls away from him like it doesn’t want to be noticed. “Name’s Ash,” he says. “Protagonist, depending who you ask.” Jonas’s voice goes flat. “You’re supposed to be off-grid.” “Yeah,” Ash replies. “So are ghosts.” He looks at me then. Really looks. No reverence. No calculation. Just recognition.

He shifted into park and then turned to look at Rome, his eyebrows raised. Nodding, Rome pulled the device out of his pocket, hoping it was nothing. By his friend’s expression, he could tell that he had been right to be suspicious. Bart muttered something so quietly, Rome didn’t hear it and turned the tiny object over in his hands a few times. Then, he rolled down the passenger side window and tossed it out into the yard of one of the large houses, rolling up the window and driving on.

Just then, a small head peeked through the suffocating smoke. “Madam, do you need any help?” someone asked timidly. I forced my eyes open and saw a young boy who was about the same age as my son. He was covered in ash and dirt, but his eyes shone brightly through the smoke. He was so small in size, yet he managed to muster the strength to help me up. Then, together, we slowly made our way outside. The path to the outside was incredibly challenging, and I felt like giving up several times.

Just towards the end of the lesson, Mrs Jones noticed that Ashley wasn't concentrating. "Ashley" She called gently but Ashley had totally spaced out. She was oblivious of her environment and her eyes were no longer focused. In her imagination, a man yelled, "You will no longer leave this place and that's final!" And then, there she was in a green robe and a silver crown on her head, crying like a baby. "Father...." "Ashely" Mrs Jones called again, snapping her fingers in Ashley's face. "Huh?" Ashley snapped out of her imagination. Balls of sweats trickled down her face and she quickly wiped it off with her handkerchief.

I can see several trees along the way, the smell of the earth, and the sound of paws against the ground, strong and fast, several others are around, but they are allies until I finally stop and look down, seeing golden paws. "Helios..." I whisper and then turn back to the gym, opening my eyes. Achilles' expression is complicated, a mixture of concern and understanding. He comes closer and hugs me and the energy in me passes into him. I feel my body getting heavy and sore, but I'm not sleepy. "Achilles..." I say quietly, closing my eyes. I feel my left hand being raised subtly and then the boxing glove coming off, and it's not long before my other hand is free.
