The Forsaken
"What more can I do?"
"I can help you cross the magic undetected, show you the way to the cabin in which you were born. There is a hand mirror inside it. Get it to me and I'll unlock all the secrets." Amara’s words hang in the air like a knife suspended by a thread. The fire pops, the sound sharp and too loud, and for a heartbeat, all I can hear is the rush of my own blood pounding in my ears. My grip tightens on the chair’s armrest until my fingers ache.
Safire is a low snarl inside me, her silver form pacing just at the edges of my mind. "Don’t," she warns. "Don’t go where she’s trying to lead you. Some doors stay closed for a reason."
