Ruby babbled to the crow. "Caaaww!" it answered back. "I think I look crazy. I'm talking to a bird and I can understand a cat monster. Fine, Uncle Venrir I'm coming." Ruby put on her shoes and followed the bird as he flew to the forest. The crow went off the track so she had to trail her way on the uneven and jagged ground. The bird led her deeper into the forest where the trees are thicker and the foliage is bigger allowing almost no light to pass at all to light her way. Several times she lost sight of the bird so she just paused and waited for Venrir to find her, which he always does and brought her further and further into the unknown. The forest soon lost the sound of the chirping birds

Ruth ended the call and left Alex and Lee with an astounded expression. “Oh God.” Their minds were about to melt down. Werewolves, vampires, witches—were all real. Alex was reminded of a book he read at Books and Artifact where he works. “Lee, I found a book at Books and Artifact that was about supernatural creatures. I think the name of the book was, um, Wars, Wood Battles, um, I can’t remember.” “You mean The Wood War by Kayla Nicky Chadson?” Ha! The boy jolted in shock as he heard the voice of Abigail behind them. They stared at each other, confused about what to say.

The cold bit harshly into my skin despite the layers I'd summoned, my tapped out reservoir was focused solely on scaling the madness of the highlands and staying alive. I should have made better preparations, should have prepared better and the evidence of my lack of better analysis of the situation appeared before me when a large Beowulf appeared in my path, large and foul smelling with two full rows of jagged teeth that was just as sharp and deadly as the mountain terrain, pure white fur covered it's huge muscular frame, giving it a kind of blend in with the snow save for the piercing blue eyes that gave it away.

Beowulf’s POV After I was done dealing with Raiha and Raymond’s shit, I was making my way to the Council Room, where the elders were to have gathered, to talk about plans for Nex’s debut. On my way there, to my ire, Raiha dared follow me, talking me into reconsidering the investigation on my mate. “Beowulf, don’t you see?! That accursed thing cannot be allowed to be here!” she told me. “Why are you bothering with this investigation? Need I remind you, she attacked me for no reason!”

It was a book they had read countless times, but each time, it held a new magic, a new wonder for Theo. “Once upon a time,” Hazel began, her voice soft and soothing, “there was a little bear named Barnaby who loved to go on adventures.” Theo’s eyes widened, his attention captivated by the story. He listened intently, his tiny fingers tracing the illustrations, his imagination soaring with each word Hazel spoke. The story of Barnaby the bear, his adventures in the forest, his encounters with talking squirrels and mischievous rabbits, filled the room with a sense of magic and wonder. Theo giggled at Barnaby’s antics, his heart filled with joy.

One, two, three… Then I heard him. Footsteps. Heavy, measured, stopping outside the nursery door. He didn’t knock. Alphas didn’t knock. But he didn’t burst in either. There was a long pause. And then — his voice. Low, rumbling, deliberately soft. “‘The Warrior Bear stomped through the forest,’” he read. “‘His roar shook the leaves from the trees. But when he found the little cub crying…’” I froze. He was doing the voices.

The chances of her still standing around are not likely, but I can always follow her scent until I find her. ‘Whatever you are planning human.’ Beowulf’s voice fades away towards the end, earning a snort from me. Useless wolf can barely do anything for very long before having to take a nap. How did I get stuck with such a powerless wolf? ‘It will not work.’ Beowulf finally finishes after some time has passed.

I smiled as I took the book and stared down at the girls. “Mummy won’t be doing story time soon.” Ruth explained. “Come in. Just give me a moment to shower and change.” I said as they walked in.
