A new title appeared on every screen in the world, scrolling in a font made of starlight: "BOOK TWO: THE MARS AUDIT. PROTAGONIST: HOPE THORNE-VANCE. STATUS: INITIALIZING..." The sound of the 1977 cassette tape played one last time—Hiss. Click. Whir.—and then, the music changed. It wasn't a ballad anymore. It was an Anthem. "Check your pulse, Reader," Hope’s voice echoed through your device. "The first chapter of the future just dropped. And this time... You’re the Co-Author."

He mindlinked him, and he nodded, sniffing. "What the fuck is going on here?" A familiar voice asked behind them, making Hashmuk let go of Rasmore. The person standing behind them was the person he was crying for, thinking he had left him. It was Kelvin, with a pile of magic books in his hands. He and his friends smelled like they were coming from the sewer.

I wasn’t even sure if he’d gotten everything settled with his frat brothers when he drove me to the airport in the morning. I tried to let those thoughts fade away while on my flight home. I put in my earbuds and decided to listen to one of the smutty werewolf audio books Hana has gotten me hooked on, Alpha Gray by CJ Primer, with Theo and Maddie as narrators. The book is HOT, and Theo’s voice… yeah, it makes for an enjoyable two-and-a-half-hour flight. I love how he changes his voice when speaking for each Alpha. Hana told me they’ve done the narration for the rest of the series, and I can’t wait to listen.

Whenever he looked at me like that, I felt nothing but goosebumps all over my skin, and my body was suddenly warmer than usual. “If you’re sure, we can start. There are water bottles all over the maze, so you don’t have to worry about being dehydrated. I’ll give you a twenty-minute head start because I am a very fast runner, and I will catch you if it’s less than that. All you need to focus on is getting to the end of the maze.” I agreed. I stood there to catch a deep breath and to decipher whether it was a good idea to play games with a monster, but I ultimately decided it was worth a shot. What was the worst that could happen anyway?

🌑 Chains of Eternity The labyrinth had shifted again. Kael could feel it in the way the floor’s rhythm changed beneath their boots, the stones seeming to breathe in sync with their footsteps. It was as if the maze was alive, waiting for one wrong choice to snap its jaws shut. Brann cursed under his breath as the corridor split into three. “Every damn path looks the same. Left, right, straight—take your pick. Maybe the thing wants us lost enough to choke on our own fear.”

Focus, Vera. The corridor narrowed, runes pulsing brighter. One flared under Dax’s boot, and he yelped, leaping back as flames licked his shoe. “Damn it!” he snarled, shaking off ash. “This place is a death trap!” Jace grabbed his arm, steadying him. “Keep moving, idiot.” His dry wit cut through the tension, but his eyes stayed sharp, scanning for more traps. I traced the runes’ pattern, my hacker brain kicking in. “Step left, then right,” I said, leading them through. Gabriel stayed close.

Now let's go. The guards stepped forward and tied the blindfolds. Total darkness swallowed me. I was led to my starting position on the left side of the maze. My other senses immediately kicked into high gear. I could hear the rustle of the wind, the distant cheers of the crowd, and the slow creak-creak-creak of the vine cage lowering Raven toward the ice. “Are we ready?” Maddox’s voice boomed through a microphone. “Kings, on my mark... Go!”

I’d have gladly walked into its yawning gullet at that moment. “It’s a very interesting book, Doon,” continued Maurice. “It’s the story of Muad’Dib, the mouse that hides from the sun and travels in the cool night.” “Sounds a bit boring,” said Flossie. “Do you think we could delay this week’s Book Club until we get out of this mess?” I requested in my most reasonable voice. Stay calm, wait for first light, and then make our way back to the lake, possibly to drown myself and get it all over with. “Just keep quiet and don’t make any sudden movements.”

AVERY'S POV: I bolted from the thicket, leaving the gruesome scene behind me. My pulse thundered in my ears as my bare feet slapped against the damp, cold earth. The maze loomed, suffocating in its enormity, its hedges closing in like walls of an unending prison. I didn’t care about getting lost anymore—I just needed to keep moving. I didn’t think about Axel, bloodied and monstrous, or the guards, or even the possibility of being caught. Survival had taken over, and every breath burned as I pushed my body past exhaustion.
