“I honestly thought this would be it.” We walk over to Liam and his friends where Princess Aurora, dressed in an outrageously pink, sparkly dress, is now entertaining the kids with her balloon animal skills. Impressed, they request all types of outrageous animals, and she delivers every single time. Liam, with an excited look on his face, runs over and shows me the bear Princess Aurora just fashioned for him. “Look, Dad. It looks just like me,” he exclaims, looking down at his own teddy costume.

"No telekinesis at the table. Rule number one." Sitting in a high chair (though she was five and definitely didn't need one) was Princess Aurora. She had wild curly hair, her mother’s beauty, and her father’s terrifying temper. "But the blue bow is ugly!" Aurora crossed her arms. Her eyes flashed a faint violet color. The chandelier above them jingled nervously. "Wear the pink one," Alex didn't look up from his tablet. He was ten now. He wore a crisp school uniform and glasses that hid his sharp, calculating eyes.

We went to Hawaii this year for our company retreat and yes that creed packed all of the Hawaii into me—on the beach, on the balcony, even once in a hammock (which we broke and had to pay for… sorry, Sheraton). Every day with him made me think of why I stayed, why I came home, why I started this new journey. Not that everything was okay, but because it was my own. Lily's daughter, Harmony Daisy Reyes—yes, that is actually her government name—was turning one year old in two weeks, and I was pulling out all the stops for her surprise birthday party. Of course, Lily had no idea. Which, for anyone who knows Lily, is saying something. She always does know everything.

She was standing there Poised yet startled, she stood with her hands held together, unsure whether to bow or step back. Aurora. Queen Vivian’s voice was warm but measured. “Princes, this is Princess Aurora of the Sapphire Pack. She’s agreed to stay with us for a time.” Her words barely registered. All I could think about was the way the air shifted around Aurora, the invisible pull drawing me forward. It wasn’t just a pull—it was a claim, a truth written into my blood.

little Aurora spoke softly as the car drove…. “Little one…” General Puro Pucasso responded. “Dad, Mom said you’re a Prince Charming? But you aren’t a prince….you’re a soldier. She even calls you her hero, Papa.” “Hey! Aurora!” A girl sitting with her cut in. “you hardly talk, it’s all about Prince Charming. You’re living in a fool’s paradise. Not everyone will be like Daddy. You always talk about good people. Only Dad is good.”

I knelt down beside her and brushed a strand of hair from her face. “That’s cute, isn’t it?” I asked. “Do you want to try it on?” She nodded eagerly, hopping up and down. The stall owner smiled as she carefully placed a bright pink hat with little daisies on Aurora’s head. “Wow, Mommy, I look like a princess!” she exclaimed, twirling around. I laughed softly. “You do look like a little princess, Aurora. Very stylish,” I said, ruffling her hair. We moved to another stall that sold little wooden toys. Aurora’s eyes widened. “Mommy. Look at the dolls!” She picked up one and held it close. “She has brown hair, just like me!”

Ian declared. “I won’t be able to sleep if something jumps at me from the shadows,” Aurora added, burying herself a little deeper into the blanket. “Choose something funny”. “Like Ian’s last five choices?” Ryan asked flatly. “I vote ‘The Princess and the Hitman’. It's got romance, action, and comedy” Aurora said suddenly. “That's just a glorified excuse to watch that lead actor you secretly have a crush on” Owen raised an eyebrow. “I do not…” Aurora began, then stopped when all four brothers turned to her in mock suspicion.
