Michael got up immediately, adjusted his clothes, then he pulled out a pack of cigarettes from his drawer himself, and stepped out onto his office balcony. He lit a cigarette, and inhaled deeply, letting the smoke blow away into the air. As the sun set, Michael's mind flooded with thoughts of Vince's from words earlier “Sun Mi is Layla.” Those words were stuck in his head and they kept on ringing aloud. “What if she is?” He asked himself. "Damn it, Vince." Michael muttered to himself. "Why did you have to bring this up now?" ~~~~ Jerry stepped into the hotel room, finding Sun Mi pacing back and forth.

Suddenly the doors were yanked open, and Michael walked in, dragging a dead beta of the Vivian Pack. “Hello friend” Michael smirked to the surprise of Jake. “Long time, no see.”

Michael ran faster than the speed of light, using the sound of gunshots and objects splintering to guide himself. He was shirtless and cold, but he would be damned if he was too late to get to Avery. For someone short on good food for more than forty eight hours, with his energy tank at an all time low, Michael gratefully banked on the residue of energy he had left.

Michael replied, his voice barely above a whisper. The vehicles sped into the night, their headlights cutting through the darkness. Michael’s grip on the armrest tightened as they neared their target, his pulse pounding in his ears. He wouldn’t stop until Evelyn was safe—and whoever dared to take her would pay the price.

“All right. I’ve never been in love. I once broke my wrist falling off a yacht. And I once got kicked out of school for starting a food fight.” “Food fight,” Viv said confidently. “The yacht?” I added. Harper, I noticed, remained quiet. Michael’s eyes flicked toward me. “Wrong,” he said after a pause. “It’s the first one. Because I have been in love.” “Ooh really?” Viv said, wiggling her eyebrows with interest. “My son has been in love and I never even found out about it? So who’s the lucky woman?” Michael chuckled. “Sorry, Mom. I’m reserving that for another time.”

He was looking at me with a terrifying, patriarchal disappointment. “You were always so much more like your mother than I liked, Victoria,” Michael said, his voice as calm as a summer morning. “Too curious for your own good. I suppose it’s time we finished the ‘Vermon’ puzzle once and for all.” He raised the gun, the barrel pointing directly at my heart. “Where is the real ledger, Victoria?”

Vincent’s fingers trembled as they hovered over the trigger of the gun. His gaze flicked back and forth between Michael, who was barely holding on, and Falsetti, who stood with a sinister smile on his face. Despite knowing that Michael deserved to pay for his crimes, Vincent couldn’t bring himself to actually pull the trigger. It was easy to talk tough, but the reality of taking a life was much harder to face.
