The copper taste of betrayal on my tongue as the sky over Boston turned to ink. "She’s awake! Doctor, she’s opening her eyes!" The voice hit me like a physical blow. It was Lurii. But her voice was wrong, it was higher, thinner, vibrating with a youthful, frantic energy untouched by the years of bourbon and bitterness I’d heard on that rooftop. I blinked, my vision swimming through a haze of tears and the stinging glare of the overhead lights. As the shapes solidified, I saw them. Standing on either side of my bed were the two architects of my ruin. Marcus and Lurii.

“Doctor Brock, something is wrong with Alpha Wyatt. I need you in his office immediately.” As I turn my attention back to Wyatt, both the Supreme Elder and Doctor Brock chime, “Okay.” I quickly nudge Wyatt’s shoulder a little harder. “Alpha Wyatt wake up. Alpha, you need to wake up.” My breath hitches as his body suddenly goes limp. Shit. He is now unconscious. I quickly grab his shoulders and shake him harder than my previous nudges. “Alpha Wyatt! Don’t scare me like this! Wake up!”

I bet no one has noticed it yet because of the low light but in the morning, everyone will notice and I bet that would make me an alien of some sort! I know I should start screaming and packing back to Northwoods where it's safe and comfortable and absolutely dull. But I don't want that, I want this. I want to be here. And I promised Sir Finnegan I won't die in the first week. I smiled and closed my eyes. I can't wait for morning.

He kisses me on the temple with passion, squeezes me tight and I relax, rest assured that he means it because I know it’s true. The doctor comes back and does further check ups on me. He tells me that he is from the full moon pack and his Alpha, Dan, summoned him to take care of me and Sophia. Dan also sent for other medical personnel to take care of other warriors that were wounded during the battle. Amy stays by my side through out the entire process of my check up. She watches quietly and pays attention to every detail of the checkup like the good girl that she is.

I had to make sure she didn’t lose herself completely to the bloodlust. But as the dawn broke fully over the horizon, the invaders’ numbers began to dwindle. For a moment I thought I had died, and gone to hell as I frowned at her. “It’s not your time yet! What are you doing here? Go back!” As she blinked, I noted that her eyes looked like those of a cat, but I didn’t have a lot of time to think about it. She waved her arm, and everything around me changed. “…Ava Talbott.” I felt my hair moving, and when I turned to look, Daniel was standing there sniffing my hair. I was standing at the edge of the ice dressed in the outfit I was wearing the day I qualified for the world championships.

He was overcome, like I was, by this beautiful white wolf encased in ice. ‘Go to her,’ I told Slade. He gently approached, then he knelt down beside her. He knew what to do. He began licking the ice, melting it with warm his tongue. I waited with baited breath. Would this work? What her wolf awaken? Slade continued to lick the ice. And then….after only a minute or so, I saw one of her paws move. She was waking up! The other paw twitched. ‘Yes Slade, keep going.’ He kept licking the ice, the frosted crystals melting at his touch. Water pooled around her body.

His hand brushed against me, but I gently moved it away. "You're tired. Just sleep," I muttered. ... I woke up early the next morning, picking out a casual T-shirt, a denim skirt, and white sneakers. I tied my hair into a bun and did my makeup. In the mirror, I looked like an energetic young girl with fair skin, a slender figure, and bright eyes. Derrick, on the other hand, was still recovering from a hangover. His eyes were bloodshot, with dark circles underneath. Luckily, his features were decent, and he wasn't that old. Once he put on the white T-shirt, knee-length denim shorts, and white sneakers I'd prepared for him, he looked livelier.
