Then my sight blurred at the edges, the glowing runes smearing into streaks of silver. I staggered forward, gripping the edge of the stone bed as my knees buckled. My wolf howled inside me, not in pain but in need and hunger. Heat flooded my body in waves, coiling low in my spine and spreading outward, drowning every rational thought. My scent exploded into the room, raw and uncontrolled, saturated with need. My heart thundered, but my awareness and reasoning slipped through my fingers. This was the Awakening. Derrick, on the other hand, was still recovering from a hangover. His eyes were bloodshot, with dark circles underneath. Luckily, his features were decent, and he wasn't that old. Once he put on the white T-shirt, knee-length denim shorts, and white sneakers I'd prepared for him, he looked livelier.

He drags a blade from his cloak, sharp, glowing with bad magic, and steps toward the altar’s edge, where shadows swirl thicker. “Jude!” I yell, voice raw, yanking harder, chains cutting deep, blood pooling under me. The runes glow brighter, pulling at me, the curse roaring like a beast. A vision hits—the burning tree again, the woman’s voice louder: Awaken now. My hands burn, light sparking under my skin, weak but real. “You’re done, Calix,” I gasp, voice breaking, feeling something new, something strong waking up.

I whispered. I reached out for him as the wolves closed in on me, but before he could get to me, the nearest one turned and leapt. Its body hit the air— And I couldn’t tell where the shadows were coming from. Something pierced my heart, and I gasped. --- I woke up too fast, like something had pulled me out of darkness by force. For a few seconds I did not move. I lay still in the attic bed, staring at the wooden ceiling. My chest rose and fell unevenly, as if I had been running for a long time.

"You're glowing." I was. Dark fire flickered under my skin, visible through the aging lines. Several phoenixes turned our way, curious. "She's recently awakened," Derek said smoothly to those watching. "Still learning control." They nodded sympathy and turned away. Recent awakening was common here, trauma triggering dormant bloodlines. No one questioned it. "Information first," Derek whispered, not releasing me. "Revenge later." "Let me go." "Not until you stop trying to commit public murder." He was right. I hated that he was right. Slowly, painfully, I pulled the fire back inside. It fought me, wanting out, wanting blood, wanting to burn everything that hurt.
