They didn’t tell me exactly why they wanted to see me, just that I should present myself at the administration office. As I crossed the pediatric hallway, something unexpected happened. I stumbled upon a little blonde girl with green eyes; her face was pale, and she seemed to have difficulty breathing. They're the perfect pairing. "Wow," I say with a sarcastic smile. "Everyone's talking about it. Apparently he caught her cheating with Lewis." "That sucks." I take my math book out of my locker then close it. "What's up with you today?" "Nothing, I'm just tired. I was babysitting late last night." I wonder if I should tell Zoey about me babysitting Zeke. She'd probably get way over excited about it though, plus I don't want Zeke to make my life hell.

She was more excited than me. “Thanks. I hope this turns out to be interesting though.” “What if it turns out to be a boring task?” I shrugged. “I’ll probably quit.” “No, no. You are not quitting. Oh, the stories I had piled up to share with them. Stories of the enchanting forest, shimmering with snow, tales of danger and guarded secrets, kisses that sealed promises, and the soft ache of heartbreak that eventually receded into healing. I would tell them about the time I barked at a stranger who cast a lingering glance at Makayla, making sure that my girls felt protected. I’d share tales of how I divided snacks with Lilac and cozied up between them whenever they forgot how to find peace in sleep.
