Before she could relish the feeling of being alive, a flash of memories came through her mind, making her feel like her head was going to burst. "Are you okay? Are you hurting somewhere?" the man stood up in a panic, looking aggrieved when he saw her pained face. Tang Yazhu then realized that the gush of memories running around in her brain were images of memories that did not belong to her. Though, she clearly understood that these flashes of memories belonged to the previous owner of the body. Since she now possessed the memories of the previous owner, it seemed that she had successfully managed to possess a human body now.

Chapter 224: The rehabilitation center stood nestled among towering trees, its quiet facade belying the countless stories of healing and resilience that echoed within its walls. Darius and Layla walked down the hushed corridors, the scent of disinfectant mingling with the subdued murmurs of rehabilitation. As they approached Room 214, the air seemed to thicken with anticipation. Layla's heart raced, the echoes of her mother's existence palpable. She took a deep breath, steadying herself for the moment that awaited on the other side of the door.

sand ashes The incline leveled again and the corridor once more angled sharply left and upward. On this level another dim rectangle beckoned. He didn’t want to go through it, didn’t want to see, wanting to keep running, but he heard something shambling up behind him, so he plunged through the doorway into another room whose walls depicted more scenes of ancient Egyptian pharaohs with cruel faces. In the middle of the room, waving snaky arms, wailing from mouths ringed with needle-point teeth, things shambled and swayed. Their naked, gray rubbery skin glistened in the torchlight. They bore only a passing resemblance to humanity but still he recognized them all.

And then, the air in the room began to vibrate with a frequency I recognized all too well. A mechanical voice, identical to the one that had started the "New Game," boomed from the rusted speakers in the ceiling: "Phase One: Survival - Complete. Phase Two: The Reconstruction - Commencing. Please select your first building block: Flesh or Steel?"

“Looks like you need some time to cool off. Once you have calmed down, I’ll come back, and we can have a proper talk.” Before he left, as he closed the door behind him, he looked at me with disappointment and said, “Sheena, you’re being a jealous mess, and it seriously makes me sick.” Bang. The door slammed shut. My head buzzed as the echo of the slam rang in my ears. Pointless? Jealous mess? So, he had really come to resent me that much. The sour feeling that had just subsided in my chest rushed back up again, and the tips of my fingers, still not fully warmed, turned cold once more.

Their moment lasted only seconds because the next wave of alarms erupted overhead. Justina stiffened. “Oh God… it’s not over?” “No,” Carson said, pushing himself up. “It’s just Phase One.” “What’s Phase Two?!” Carson stared down the dark corridor ahead, lit only by intermittent flickers of emergency lanterns. His father’s voice suddenly crackled through the metal walls, distorted by failing speakers but unmistakably smug. “Phase Two is memory, Carson. The deeper fire. The truth you can’t bury.’’ Justina grabbed Carson’s arm.

She leans in close, whispering, “Then try faster.” I smirk despite the tension. “You always say that.” Her lips curve. “And you always make it dramatic.” The faintest warmth passes between us, the same spark that’s survived every betrayal. I cling to it while I work, fingers flying over the keyboard. If I can isolate the core node, maybe I can burn the connection before it reaches us physically. Then a message blinks onto the screen: > STEP TWO: RECLAMATION. The power dips. The lights dim. Machinery whirs to life behind the walls.

Ivy narrowed her eyes. "How are you so sure?" she asked immediately. "Shouldn't we be focusing on surviving first? We still have an entire building filled with monsters." She folded her arms across her chest. "We don't even know what's waiting behind most of these doors. Rushing around carelessly sounds like a terrible idea." Nathan let out a scoff. "Basement Level Two contains a massive golden door," Nathan explained. "The place is heavily guarded, and there are monsters stationed all around it."
