she said, cutting her steak with precise movements, “how was your day with my brother?”
I hesitated, unsure how to summarize everything that had happened — the argument, the kiss, the way my pulse still hadn’t found its rhythm.
“Intense,” I said finally.
“That’s one word for him.”
I looked up. “You sound like you know exactly what that means.”
“I grew up in this house,” she said softly, her eyes distant. “Intensity is our family’s language. You just learned it late.”
That made me smile a little. “Kavin dropped me off,” I said after a moment. “He said something strange before I got out.”
