Somehow about thirty minutes into reading, I was lulled to sleep by the breeze that had now turned cool and the hypnotizing writing style of the author of the cookbook. I jerked awake to the sound of something crashing close to me. It was still dark and I was not sure how long I had slept.

I added quickly, “For beginners.” “Cooking? You mean a recipe book?” “Not a recipe book.” I pressed my lips, trying to explain what I had in mind. “A book that teaches the basics, like techniques, equipment. One that can teach you from scratch.” He furrowed his brows, thinking for a moment before walking over to one of the bookshelves. He climbed onto a step stool, then pulled out one of the books from the very top shelf. He dusted the cover off with his hand, then blew on it before climbing back down and handing it to me.

I guess now I’ll be able to say I went without food for 3 days as well. I pulled one of the books off the shelf, rolling my eyes at the title, “Cooking for the beginner.” I chuckled, “unless you have water dishes in you, you’ll be of no use to me.” I flipped to the first page and began reading. The book was about different herbs and spices that could be used to create soups. Bringing the book over to the desk, I opened the cabinet and began sniffing the contents to identify each one. I wrote them all down on a piece of paper numbered the way I placed them back into the cabinet. I bit of pride bloomed in my chest and Scarlett chuckled, “that was all me, don’t be so proud of yourself.”

They rounded the last column and there it was: Baker’s Delight, glass cases gleaming with golden pastries, crusty loaves, plaits lacquered in glaze, rows of soft rolls dusted with flour like fresh snow.
