I met her dancing with dad's photo at the kitchen table.

I said in a much lower tone. "What did you say?" My mum turned her head to me as I still stood behind her. “Mhm, oh nothing she just seems nice" I lied. Mum wouldn't understand even if I told her. From all the movies I watched the neighbor always turned out to be the killers. But Stacey seemed nice enough, she wasn’t going to suddenly turn into a killer. I looked back at the house as my mum moved away from me. "Mum! Mum! I need to pee." Barbie whined.

I needed to sing it. After a couple of minutes I already had part of the melody. “ Andy Grammer , Don't Give Up On Me, ” Galvin stated, making me jump in shock. I smiled agreeing. He looked uncomfortable, though he strode into the room, dragging a chair faded with age. Mom used it to sit on and write when she was in this room. "Can we get to the point?" It was like a bad breakup; with the difference that we never had a loving relationship.

I didn't want her to ridicule me. Mom stared at me and sighed. She placed her fork down and approached me. My back tensed as I dug my nails into my palms. Fear gripped my heart. I was terrified that she was going to say something. I didn't want to hear her say that word again. However, Mom simply kneeled down next to me and brushed her fingers gently along the back of my swollen head. "I lived a tough life, Claire. There were a lot of children in my family, and your grandparents didn't like me. Eventually, I got to marry your father, but unfortunately, he died young."

"Sign it! Sign it right now!" My mother's voice was raw and cracking as she pointed at the disownment notice on the floor. I stood there frozen, tears streaming down my face, but I couldn't force myself to move an inch. "Enough!" A low, stern voice cut through the chaos. My father, George Ballmer, hurried over. He glanced at my mother, who looked half out of her mind, then shot a quick look at me. He gripped her trembling shoulders, his voice laced with a weariness he could barely hide.

I said half kneeling down "Omotara, hope you slept well?" She asked "Yes mum, what are you cooking?" "Yam with fried eggs," "Okay ma." I took the yam and peeled it. (Time Skip) We sat in the living room, (speaking of We, I meant Mum, Dad and I) watching an Indian series on Zee World. Thanks to mum, she finally hypnotized dad to fell in love with Indian movies. I decided to discuss the threat issue. "Dad, mum, may I have your attention?"

Aunt Barbara even took me by the hand and said with great earnestness, "Your mother has been honest ever since she was a child. She never lies. What this world needs more of is straightforward people like her. "You should learn from your mother, okay? Look at me—when your mother tells me the truth, I never get upset. Having someone like that in your life is a blessing. Tiffany, you really ought to cherish that." I tilted my head and stared at Aunt Barbara for a few seconds before saying, "Is that so? Well then, Aunt Barbara, Mom says you're a total mooch. Every time you come to our house, you practically clean out the fridge, like some kind of beggar. Is that true?"

I retorted, "Your mom's health started failing quite a while back. I told you about it several times before, but you were just too busy taking care of the 'terminally-ill' Phillip to heed my words. That's why you were unaware of her situation for so long! "That day, I called you when the doctors were performing emergency treatment on her. However, you only picked up after multiple calls, and even then, you barely spoke to me before running off to soak in the hot springs with Phillip! Have you forgotten about that?"

Mom picked an old favorite: When Harry Met Sally, something light and funny with just enough heart to feel comforting. We settled on the couch, me in the middle with Maverick on one side and Mom on the other. Halfway through, Mom yawned and excused herself. “Old lady hours,” she said with a wink. “You kids enjoy the rest.” When she was gone, Maverick draped an arm around my shoulders. I leaned into him, my head on his chest, listening to the steady thump of his heart under the fabric of his shirt. The movie played on, Billy Crystal and Meg Ryan bantering through New York streets, but I wasn’t really watching.

This one was different—full of teenage Jazzlin with her friends, her laughter frozen in time. One photo stopped me cold. Jazzlin with her arms looped around a boy’s neck, almost choking him. His beanie hid half his face, but not enough to hide who it was. Barra. My breath caught. His expression was half-annoyed, half-resigned—like he was used to her antics. Was this love? A knock snapped me out of it. “Jazzlin? Are you still up?” I quickly stuffed the albums back into the drawer, heart racing. “Yeah. Come in, Mom.”
