Set Fire and Burn
I could hear them hissing, like water on a grill.
“Not the couch!” He snatched me off the couch and carried me over to a corner, where he sat me on my feet, panic filling me, flames covering my body. He put his hands on my face, his thumbs wiping my tears. “Stop crying. Take a deep breath and calm down,” he said in an even tone, a tone that sounded confused and forced. There was a knock on the door and a muffled word I couldn’t understand with the flames licking over my ears. “Come in, slowly,” he said as he gently rubbed my arm and wiped another tear from my face, my flames not fazing him.
