Her chin was lifted, her eyes blazing blue fire in defiance, but I could see the truth beneath it—the tremor of rage, the silent scream trapped in her throat.
My father’s voice boomed across the stage.
“Ladies and gentlemen,” Richard Devlin announced, arms spread wide like a god claiming his world. “Tonight marks a new union. A partnership not only of business, but of blood.”
The crowd hushed, leaning forward like vultures circling a kill.
“My son, Lucian Devlin, and Beverley Austin, shall be wed.”
Thunderous applause exploded, hollow and sharp.
