They both looked back to the mouth of the river. Along the coast, they could see the spread of expensive esplanade houses overlooking the beach, along with the jetty which had once served as a major harbor, and now was a tourist attraction. The Jetty Restaurant, famous for its fresh seafood, was open for business, with brightly colored umbrellas open over the outdoor seating and patrons sipping champagne and chatting amongst themselves. If they’d heard the gunshots, they had not realized what they were – or they were common enough not to cause them to interrupt their meals.
Small recreational vehicles bobbed on the water, moored around the jetty.
