She eased her foot off the gas, heart still pounding painfully against her ribs. Ahead, the intersection blurred into a mess of light and shadow. Reiley squinted through the rain. A truck — a huge, hulking thing — hurtled toward the crossing, its tires screaming on the wet pavement, its headlights twin suns burning through the dark. Reiley’s mind screamed: NO! She slammed her foot on the brake. The car skidded sideways, tires losing grip on the flooding asphalt. Time fractured.
