I sniffed the air and sensed Caris in her bear form charging at me to hurt me. I couldn’t even turn entirely to face her when I felt a heavy blow on my ribs that sent me flying several yards away. I rolled over after landing and felt and heard ribs cracking, and I hissed in pain. I stopped on my back and clutched my side, gazing towards Caris. Her bear stood upright on its hind legs, roaring before it returned on its four, clacking its teeth and huffing while pounding its front paws on the ground. I knew she was warning me, but I had no fucking clue why she was about to attack me.

“Get its attention Kaelan! Rivena and I will find an opening to strike back!” The black wolf curved his back and exposed his fangs. The bear was enraged by his aggressive gesture. Waiving its claws frantically in the air, the bear lunged at Kaelan at full speed! At the same time, Rivena and Aurora went for the bear’s opening back together. Rivena jumped and shifted in the midair. She landed on the bear’s back and dug its fangs deep into the bear’s flesh. The bear felt pain. It started struggling like crazy, twirling its body around.

She eased her foot off the gas, heart still pounding painfully against her ribs. Ahead, the intersection blurred into a mess of light and shadow. Reiley squinted through the rain. A truck — a huge, hulking thing — hurtled toward the crossing, its tires screaming on the wet pavement, its headlights twin suns burning through the dark. Reiley’s mind screamed: NO!
