He sniffs me. My stomach turns. I jerk away instinctively, my heart thundering. “Mmm,” he preys. “Fresh. Real fresh.” I freeze. My blood runs cold. I’ve heard about towns like this. Hidden pockets where the old rules hold fast. Where vampires and Werewolves still rule the shadows, and humans are watched like fresh cattle. In New York, we have codes, boundaries. Don’t talk to them. Don’t look them in the eye. Keep your head down.

“It’s the heart of Shifter City; I’ll take you there sometime soon. It’s a nice space to walk around, the most well-kept part of town.” That was a nice idea. The architecture sings with a harmony of cultures: curved archways carved like dragon wings, high towers woven with vines and living flowers, and crystal lanterns pulsing with energy and light. The city is alive, breathing, a place that has no memory of war.

Way granted, I walked into the vampires den with my team in tow. The elevator ride to the penthouse was unnervingly silent, the hum of the machinery the only sound. When the doors opened, we were greeted by a lavish room bathed in dim light. Caesar, the Lord of Sterling City vampires, lounged on a throne-like chair at the far end, his sharp features accentuated by the flickering light of a nearby fire.
