This innocent luna was making her appreciate all the simple things in life. So sweet and adorable. "Hey, Bev!" She smiled at the barista. The girl was a she-wolf at the royal pack. Mated with pups. How she wished she could share the good news --she can't. Not yet. It has to come from their king. The pack and the kingdom will know soon enough.

I loved going up the staircase, so that was where my books were kept. I didn’t expect it to still be there—I was just curious what was—but I was shocked to find it fully stocked. The young adult novels still sat, but the collection had expanded to two shelves. Classics from Charlotte Brontë and Jane Austen, the entire Harry Potter series, and many others lined up together. One in particular caught my eye—La Belle et la Bête by Gabrielle-Suzanne Barbot de Villeneuve. The origin of the Beauty and the Beast fairy tale.

She paused, taken aback by Arielle’s sudden enthusiasm. “Even if it means Mom crying all night,” Estelle chimed in from across the room, rolling her eyes dramatically. Crystal shot her a mock glare and defended herself. “You don’t understand the beauty of a good book. So what if it’s sad? If the author can move you to ugly tears, it means they have written something truly special.” She turned back to Arielle, her expression softening. “That’s what makes this book so good.” “I couldn’t agree more,” Arielle said, nodding fervently. Her eyes sparkled with admiration. “Maa, have you tried Chains of Desires by the same author? If you loved this one, there are so many others you’d enjoy!”

"Haha, Lawrence, I've finally sold the rights to my fantasy novel!" The moment I said this, Lawrence and his son and daughter-in-law were stunned. Lawrence instinctively asked, "Does that mean you'll be getting a lot of money?"

I stopped at the library door and smiled to myself. ‘Books are better than people. Books don’t hate on you for something you didn’t do.’ I pushed the door open and breathed in the wonderful smell of books. ‘Paradise.’ I strolled to the shelves and scanned through the books, reading their names off their spines. ‘It seems Dante wasn’t joking when he said half of his library was filled horrors.’ A book caught my eye, and I pulled it from the others. “Bone and Souls by B. Brian.” I read the name aloud and skimmed through the description behind it. “This seems interesting.”

He shook her from his mind and pushed open the doors to the study. The rug-lined room was bigger than B’s above-garage apartment. Floor to ceiling bookshelves dampened any noise B might made in his whiskey search. There didn’t seem to be a single inch of space on any one of the shelves. Books of all colors, textures, and sizes were packed together. In front of the book spines sat hundreds of little treasures–seashells, pocket watches, glass figurines, and carvings of creatures. So many creatures. B let his fingers drift over the book spines: The Picture of Dorian Gray. The Catcher in the Rye. The Odyssey. Brave New World. The Call of the Wild. White Noise. So many stories he’d never read and

I donated a dozen books from the Barlowe house—stories I wanted other young girls to find: Jane Eyre, Little Women, The Secret Life of Bees, Becoming, The House on Mango Street, and more. Books that had whispered to me when the world was too loud. Books that had taught me what a woman could be. Mrs. Bertram smiled as she scanned the titles. “This will change someone’s life,” she said. I nodded. “That’s the goal.” I stopped at the market afterward for fresh apples and ginger chews. A few people I knew offered kind smiles, congratulations, warm nods. The town had softened. The whispers had quieted. And even when they hadn’t… I no longer let them land.
