The roads seemed dull, yet strangely alive, as if, it was talking to me. The murmur of the dry leaves at the beginning of the winter and the hum of the gentle breeze played like a monotonous music in my ears. I just stood there, in the secluded road, all alone as the autumn breeze caressed me gently, reaching deep into my soul.

“Yeah. Always been a dog person.” Jax just smiles and shrugs, letting me handle the conversation. After a few more minutes of small talk, the couple wanders off to greet someone else, and Jax leans in to whisper, “Animal shelter?” I arch a brow. “You’re welcome.” Before he can respond, another figure steps into view. Tall, broad-shouldered, and wearing a smug grin that makes my stomach tighten in warning. Beckett Vance, quarterback for a rival team—and apparently Jax’s personal nemesis.

“Have faith in the Moon Goddess. She won’t take him from us.” He nods and takes a ragged breath. Primrose makes my nails grow and gives him little scritches on his back to comfort him. “Beckett, you were there for him, and you did all the right things. I’m so proud of you.” I let him rest the weight of his body against me while we wait. “Beta, he’s stable and resting.” Doctor Benton finally comes down the hall. “His injuries are indicative of a fight with a wolf, but the kids said there was no fight?”

He was in front of me then he was gone. The solidness of the earth was swept from under me as he swung his leg under me and my back hit the earth. I felt my power getting restless, wanting to be let free. As the wind was knocked out of my lungs, my vision became clear and I saw Beck peel his face over my face. With he a grin on his face he chuckled, "Is that all you've got?" I grabbed his legs and pulled them up from underneath him and pulled myself up. "Game on Beck."

“But I promise you will be.” I punched him in the face and felt the bones in his nose break under my knuckles. He screamed, blood oozing from his nostrils. I leaned over him again, punching his face harder, savoring the crack of bone under my fist. His screams filled the night and I basked in his terror. My fists dripped red as the fucker wailed like a dying beast. A gust of wind stirred the trash littering the alley. The sweet-spicy scent of an omega blooming into heat tickled my nose, and I paused mid-punch.

“Hey... Barbie.” Victor’s voice sounded making Becca flinch backward. Ezra and Reid quickly walk in front, mindlink on how to take him out. “You know I can hear all you say... Arggg!” Before Victor could finish his words, a deep roar followed and he fell to the floor. And then Becca watched him again, Ezra and Reid got ready to attack him but they waited for him to stand up. “Guys, hang in it is me. I made him think he wins so that I would be able to push everything down his digestive system!” Alexander uttered touching his forehead and breathing loudly.

All that was left was the blood and the pound of flesh that I spat onto the ground. “We have a winner! The Beast from Forest Hills!” Ricochet celebrated, and the crowd went wild. It’s true what they say: a name is something that you’re given or you’ve earned. I had been given the name Beast, and I supposedly earned it all the same. But could I honestly say I was proud of how I obtained it? It was my pride that stopped me from sharing that with you today. All that I can say is that nothing in this life comes for free. It generally costs something, and today I can honestly say I paid the ultimate price.

And I had lost. He stood abruptly and motioned for me to climb onto his back. I didn’t argue. I no longer had the strength to. I wrapped my arms around his neck, and he lifted me effortlessly. The walk back through the forest passed in complete silence. Fenric carried me through the autumn trees, through the labyrinth beyond them, through the endless stone corridors of Blackreach—and neither of us spoke a single word. Drained and defeated, I rested my forehead against his shoulder. And I cried quietly, letting the tears fall where he couldn’t see my face.

“No, it’s not a coincidence, the gymnasium is named after my family. Now that we’ve introduced ourselves, I trust that I’ll not have any more interruptions when I use the punching bag.” Evan Alston watched the threesome from his position against the wall. He had been as enraptured as everyone else at the strength and skill displayed by the tiny woman. It had been astonishing to see the woman defeat men three times her size. He became even more intrigued when he overheard someone whisper her identity. The Beast.

I watch him for a moment and he doesn’t get up. The fighting is moving more and more toward the packhouse and I know that I have to get Becca out of the fray. I pick her up, her skin sloughing off around my arms. I know that touching her must hurt, but she almost seems beyond the pain and does not flinch or make a sound. Unfortunately, there was nothing else that I could do for her. I have to get back out to the fight. I place her as gently as possible on the floor inside the doorway. Moon Goddess, please protect her. I pray.
