CHAPTER 45 — The Calm Before Leaving POV: Melissa The decision settled quietly. Not with tears. Not with raised voices or dramatic confrontations. Just a stillness so deep it frightened her. Melissa woke before dawn, the house suspended in that fragile silence that existed only before people woke up and put their masks back on. The curtains fluttered faintly as morning crept in, pale and undecided, and she sat by the window fully dressed, her suitcase zipped at her feet.

The journey to the Lunar Fortress began before dawn. The first light of morning stretched across the horizon like a bleeding wound, casting a pale glow over the misty valley. The air was heavy with anticipation, the kind that clung to skin and bone, whispering of battles yet to be fought.

The next morning, Mia woke up before sunrise. The room was still shrouded in darkness, but she didn't hesitate to get up. Heck, I even took the time to comment on Rhys’ updates. “Don’t forget to burn the sheets I’ve slept on.” By the time I refreshed the page, the post was gone. A minute-long voice note popped up in the family group chat. Instead of tapping to listen, I removed myself from the group chat. It was another day of rehearsals that ended at ten at night. I routinely slapped a pain-relief patch onto my wrist before packing my things to head back to the dorms.

There was silence on the other end of the line for a moment before Mom spoke again. "You're not giving it to me? Sheila, what do you mean?" Her voice was full of shock, as if last night had never happened. In her eyes, everything was still calm and peaceful.

The morning had a different quality to it. I noticed this before I noticed anything else — before the press notifications still accumulating on my phone, before the board meeting Daniel had scheduled for ten, before the particular weight of a Tuesday that had a great deal expected of it. The apartment had the specific quality of a morning that contained someone in it, which it now did in a way that was no longer new but had not yet become ordinary enough to stop noticing.

Noah and Adrian's POV The morning of the celebration dawned bright and warm, sunlight spilling through the curtains of our bedroom like a soft promise. It was one of those rare mornings when everything felt perfectly aligned, like the universe itself was smiling on us. Adrian and I woke up early, not out of necessity, but because our excitement wouldn’t let us rest. Today wasn’t just another gathering. “Take a shower. Get some rest.” A brief pause. “We leave in the morning.”
