The future we'd just started to believe in. My hand moved to my stomach. Still flat. Still secret. No one knew except us and my doctor. But someone had mentioned it in that text. Congratulations on the baby. How did they know? We hadn't told anyone. Hadn't announced. Hadn't even started telling people. "They're watching us," I said. "They knew about the pregnancy." Adam's jaw tightened. "I know." "Adam, how did they know?" He didn't have an answer. Neither did I.

I could not recall a single bite of that meal. All I remembered was the look on everyone's face, as if I were on trial for a crime. Past nine that night, Howard and I drove back to the city in silence.
